^T occasionally happens that evidence unknown to
%J the noble Author of the Lives of the Lindsay«
emerges from the greater antiquarian searches ot
the present time. Recently a new Jiecord Society for
the County of Bedford has printed a collection of
charters relating to the Nuns of Chicksand, many of
these being endorsed on an Exchequer Roll, tevip.
Henry IV. on the occasion of a most interesting judrr-
ment on the liability of the Nuns to be taxed for a
Subsidy.
The Nunnery was founded 1147-50, and among the
more important grants was one by William de Lindesay,
with the consent of his father, Walter, for the salvation
of himself, his father and mother, and of Walter
Lengleis and his predecessors, of eight score acres of
tillable land in Molesworth, ten acres of meadow and
common pasture, both on the demesne and on the
lands of hia men, for twenty score sheep and twenty-
four animals. This considerable gift is witnessed by
Walter the father, Drogo de Lindesey, Godefrid,
Chaplain to Countess Rohaise (the founder), Magister
Serlo, Chaplain of the King of Scotland, and a number
of others.
