William <strong>Lindsay</strong>, Ninetekntii Laird <strong>of</strong><br />

Wauchope and BAiiCLOY, married in 1GG2 Anne,<br />

daughter and sole heiress <strong>of</strong> Miuigo <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Bonhill,<br />

Dumbartonshire ; II ai\d until his fa<strong>the</strong>r's death he was<br />

designated "<strong>of</strong> Bonhill." When ho came into his<br />

inheritance <strong>the</strong> estates were already mortgaged ;<br />

his financial difficulties had begun before this, for in<br />

1670 he was in prison in <strong>the</strong> tolbooth (^f Dumfries on<br />

account <strong>of</strong> a bond to Smollet, dated 8th April 1068.11^<br />

Not even with <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> his wife's fortune was he<br />

able to free himself from his embarrassments. It too<br />

went with <strong>the</strong> rest. In 1684 James Smollet <strong>of</strong><br />

Stainflett, ancestor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> novelist, was infeft in<br />

Bonhill, probably on a mortgage at this time, for Anne<br />

<strong>Lindsay</strong> seems still to have had some rights in her<br />

patrimonial estate in 1690, though tlie.se eventually<br />
