Maxwell of Cowhill f and they had issue,

William Lindsay, Ninetekntii Laird of
Wauchope and BAiiCLOY, married in 1GG2 Anne,
daughter and sole heiress of Miuigo Lindsay of Bonhill,
Dumbartonshire ; II ai\d until his father's death he was
designated "of Bonhill." When ho came into his
inheritance the estates were already mortgaged ;

his financial difficulties had begun before this, for in
1670 he was in prison in the tolbooth (^f Dumfries on
account of a bond to Smollet, dated 8th April 1068.11^
Not even with the help of his wife's fortune was he
able to free himself from his embarrassments. It too
went with the rest. In 1684 James Smollet of
Stainflett, ancestor of the novelist, was infeft in
Bonhill, probably on a mortgage at this time, for Anne
Lindsay seems still to have had some rights in her
patrimonial estate in 1690, though tlie.se eventually
