niasouiy only <strong>the</strong> merest fragment remains on <strong>the</strong><br />

steep bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wauchope Watei-. The illustration<br />

facing page 195 gives a view <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> site. 'He trees in<br />

<strong>the</strong> middle distance clo<strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong> sides <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gorge through<br />

which flows <strong>the</strong> Wauchope Water half-a-mile above its<br />

junction with <strong>the</strong> river Esk. A modern road from<br />

Langholm to Lockerbie and Annan runs through part<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> moat, passing <strong>the</strong> old kiikyard <strong>of</strong> Wauchope,<br />

which is marked by a cross on <strong>the</strong> drawing. The<br />

obelisk in <strong>the</strong> distance is <strong>the</strong> monument to Sir John<br />

Malcolm standing on Whita Hill on <strong>the</strong> iar<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> town <strong>of</strong> Langholm.<br />

James <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Wauchope and Barcloy,<br />

Sixteenth Laird, was served heir to his fa<strong>the</strong>r 20th<br />

January 1607. \ In <strong>the</strong> same year he was included in<br />

a commission <strong>of</strong> tire and sword against two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

servitors <strong>of</strong> Lord Sanquhar, outlawed for <strong>the</strong> slaughter<br />

<strong>of</strong> Andrew <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> llascarrel.§ Like o<strong>the</strong>r <strong>Lindsay</strong>s<br />

<strong>of</strong> Galloway he was attached to <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> Maxwell,<br />

and when in 1612 Lord Maxwell was a fugitive from<br />

<strong>the</strong> law for <strong>the</strong> murder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Laird <strong>of</strong> Johnstone, he<br />
