that <strong>the</strong> castle <strong>of</strong> Wauuhopu, which had become<br />

valueless to o<strong>the</strong>rs, was restored to <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

When, shortly alter tlie Battle <strong>of</strong> Flodden, Lord<br />

Dacre had raided <strong>the</strong> West Marches <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, he<br />

reported to <strong>the</strong> English Council that he had destroyed<br />

34 townships and 400 ploughlands, " which are now<br />

clearly wasted, and no man dwelleth in any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m<br />

at this day, save only in <strong>the</strong> towrys <strong>of</strong> Annand Stepel,<br />

and Walghapp."* Wauchope and <strong>the</strong>se o<strong>the</strong>rs were<br />

evidently too strong to be reduced in <strong>the</strong> course <strong>of</strong> a<br />

hurried foray.<br />

In 1518 <strong>the</strong> Scottish Wardens <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Marches con-<br />

sulted as to how peace and order might be maintained<br />

within <strong>the</strong>ir jurisdiction, and one proposal among o<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

was that Lord Maxwell, Warden <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> We^t March,<br />

should take up his residence in Wauchope, from which<br />

position he might best control <strong>the</strong> western district.!<br />

This proposal appears to have been carried into effect,<br />

for in June 1523 Lord Dacre speaks <strong>of</strong> a raid being<br />

made to <strong>the</strong> tower <strong>of</strong> Wauchope for <strong>the</strong> purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

keeping Lord Maxwell in check while o<strong>the</strong>r operations<br />

were in progress.<br />

It is probable that <strong>the</strong> castle<br />

suffered from repeated attacks, and that <strong>the</strong>re was<br />

neglect to repair damage when no one had a personal<br />

interest in doing so. To remedy this, from <strong>the</strong> national<br />

point <strong>of</strong> view, unsatisfactory state <strong>of</strong> affiirs, Lord<br />

Maxwell was given a lease <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> property in Wauchope-<br />

dale, which had belonged to John <strong>Lindsay</strong>, on this<br />
