194 THK LINDSAYS OF James Lindsay of Fkrcloy liaving property in Dumfries became a freeman of llio l)urirli unj was chosen bailie. On 15Ui Feb. 1577-8, along with the provost, Archibald M'Brair, and the town clerk, he was sent to Edinburgli to represent the town at the command of the Ke«,rent.t James Lindsay, Fij^teentii Lajkd, sc^n of the preceding, was retoured heir 20th June 1587,j and had sasine of Reidspittal in 1590.§ Li the latter year as one of the Border landlords and heads of families from whom this security was exacted, he was reijuired to find caution for the conduct of his dupendants.|| He it was who brought the action at law for the reduction of the sentence of forfeiture under which the family had lain since the time of his great-grandfather, and the action was completely successful so far as the pronouncement of the court could avail. In its judcrment Parliament declares the process, sentence an°d doom of forfalture "To have bene fra ye beginning and siclyk to be in all tyme cumming null and of naue avail force strenth nor eiiect with all that hes followit or may follow thairupoun / And decernis and declaris be decreit of yis present parliament ye said James Lindsay now of Barcloy pronevoy and air To the said umquhile Johnne lindsay his grand^hir To be restorit and reintegratis him his aris and successouris in Integrum Aganis the said pretendit proces sentence [and] dome of foirfaltrie / And presentlie restoris tharae to t Burgh Court Books of Dumfries, M.S.
