told by one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> party aent to observe <strong>the</strong> transit <strong>of</strong><br />

Venus by H.M. Government, that on <strong>the</strong>ir arrival near<br />

Cadiz it was found that none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m could erect tin'<br />

telescopes; and that if Lord Lindnuy had not com';<br />

over from his own station and erected <strong>the</strong>m, <strong>the</strong><br />

Government party would have observed nothing.<br />

Earl Ludovic equipped a splendid observatory at<br />

Dunecht in Aberdeenshire, and after he repurcluised<br />

Balcarres from his maternal uncle, Sir Coutts <strong>Lindsay</strong>,<br />

and migrated <strong>the</strong>re, he presented his instruments and<br />

astronomical library to <strong>the</strong> nation f^r use at Edinburgh.<br />

Two <strong>of</strong> his assistants became distinguished astrunumers,<br />

viz. : Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Copeland at Edinburgh and Sir David<br />

Gill at <strong>the</strong> Cape, both Astronomers Royal.<br />

Lord Crawford was twice Vice-President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Institution <strong>of</strong> <strong>Electric</strong>al Engineers ; was President <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Royal Astronomical <strong>Society</strong> ;<br />

an Honorary Member<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Institution <strong>of</strong> Mechanical Engineers, and was<br />

elected in 1878 a Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Royal <strong>Society</strong>. No<br />

better appreciation <strong>of</strong> his service on behalf <strong>of</strong> students<br />

has appeared than <strong>the</strong> obituary notice published by<br />

<strong>the</strong> Faraday House Journal in February 1913.<br />

Lord Crawford was a great librarian, and <strong>the</strong><br />

catalogue which he published <strong>of</strong> his vast library is<br />

considered a masterpiece. Finding it necessary at his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r's death to sell a portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> library, he con-<br />

tributed Introductions to two sale catalogues <strong>of</strong> Messrs<br />

So<strong>the</strong>by, which exhibit a tender love <strong>of</strong> books.<br />

Afterwards he collected a Philatetic library, and a<br />

great mass <strong>of</strong> documents relating to <strong>the</strong> actors in <strong>the</strong><br />

French Revolution, and was preparing a catalogue <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> latter at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> his death. lie had also<br />
