The Castle appeurs to have been a place <strong>of</strong> con-<br />

siderable strength, and was surrounded by a moat,<br />

<strong>the</strong> entrance being by a drawbridge, guarded by an<br />

arched gateway, which was surmounted by a atone<br />

bearing <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>. It is supposed to have<br />

been built by <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lindsay</strong>s sometime between 14(J0<br />

and 1452, and here <strong>the</strong>y reigned in great splendour<br />

until <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century. The<br />

last laird, who was very extravagant, always went<br />

out attended by twelve vassals mounted on white<br />

chargers. He latterly got involved in a feud with<br />

some <strong>of</strong> his neighbours, and through one thing and<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r he became very poor and died in a bam<br />

belonging to one <strong>of</strong> his former tenants.<br />

After <strong>the</strong> Castle had been explored and its inter-<br />

esting features explained by Dr <strong>Lindsay</strong>, <strong>the</strong> })arty<br />

proceeded to Hamilton, Crossbasket being j)assed on<br />

<strong>the</strong> way. By <strong>the</strong> kindness <strong>of</strong> Mr Kerr <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hamilton<br />

Estate Office, permission was granted to drive through<br />

<strong>the</strong> grounds <strong>of</strong> Hamilton Palace and view <strong>the</strong><br />

Mausoleum, after which dinner was served in <strong>the</strong><br />

Commercial Hotel, Hamilton, when al)out GU members<br />

and friends were present, including :<br />
