William <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mains was a Connnissioner <strong>of</strong><br />

Supply for Kirkcudbrightshire in IGWO, and again in<br />

1704. t He was also one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> tacksmen <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

excise duties in Aiinun(hde and Kirkcudbrightshire.}<br />

In 1693 his wife, Jonnet Stivciisone, had sa.sine in<br />

liferent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> manor |)lace <strong>of</strong> Mains, an«l <strong>of</strong> an annuity<br />

<strong>of</strong> twelve hundred merks Scots furth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> icn ])unnd<br />

lands <strong>of</strong> Mains, etc.§<br />

During <strong>the</strong> Rebellion <strong>of</strong> 1715, it having been<br />

reported that <strong>the</strong> rebels intended to aitaek Dumfries,<br />

<strong>the</strong> country people were sununoned to <strong>the</strong> delence <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> town. "The chief Thing observable with respect<br />

to this Rendezvous is, That J\Ir <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mains,<br />

Stewart Depute, in <strong>the</strong> Intimation <strong>of</strong> this Meeting,<br />

had call'd <strong>the</strong> People to meet, without requiring <strong>the</strong>m<br />

to bring Horses or Arms, So that <strong>of</strong> above 5UUU Men<br />

<strong>the</strong>re were but very few arm'd. The Dejuity Lieu-<br />

tenants being <strong>of</strong>fended <strong>the</strong>reat, Mains alleg'd for<br />

himself. That <strong>the</strong> Lord Lieutenant's Order to him,<br />

for <strong>the</strong> said Intimation, did not bear that <strong>the</strong> (Jountry<br />

should bring Horses or Arms, but <strong>the</strong> Contrary being<br />

known, <strong>the</strong>y requir'd him to produce it. But he<br />

alleored he had left it at Home. His Conduct in this<br />

gave some Umbrage to believe a lve[)ort, That this<br />

Gentleman had kept a Correspondence with some <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Rebels ; and <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>the</strong>r, That tho' he had several<br />
