infer <strong>the</strong> derivation <strong>of</strong> tlic LiiKlsay.s <strong>of</strong> Mains from<br />

those <strong>of</strong> Fairgirth. There is no pro<strong>of</strong> tliat <strong>the</strong> fniuer<br />

were cadets <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> latter.<br />

Roger <strong>Lindsay</strong>, first <strong>of</strong> Mains, was liviriL^^ in 1574.*<br />

In 1585 his widow, Jonct Maxwell, set to lleri)ert<br />

<strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mains, " lier haill third part <strong>of</strong> tiie lord-<br />

ships <strong>of</strong> Mains," James <strong>Lindsay</strong>, bro<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> Herbert,<br />

being one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> witnesses.! Herbeit and James<br />

were doubtless <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> Roger, but <strong>the</strong>re is leason<br />

to believe that Jonet Maxwell was not <strong>the</strong>ir mo<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

She, however, bore to her husband, Ro«rer Lindsav<br />

two daughters, namely, Nicolas, wife <strong>of</strong> Gilbert<br />

Kirkhauch or Kirko, <strong>of</strong> Soundaywell, and Bessie, wife<br />

<strong>of</strong> Robert Redik in Barnhourie.]: After <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Lindsay</strong> Jonet Maxwell married Robert Forrester,<br />

burgess <strong>of</strong> Kirkcudbright.<br />

Herbert <strong>Lindsay</strong>, second <strong>of</strong> Mains, as a follower <strong>of</strong><br />

John Lord Maxwell, was included in <strong>the</strong> Act <strong>of</strong><br />

Indemnity <strong>of</strong> 1585.|| The last notice we have <strong>of</strong> him<br />

is in 1608, when he had to find security in 1000 merks<br />

not to reset Mr Gilbert Brown, ex-abbot <strong>of</strong> Newabbey.1l<br />

Roger <strong>Lindsay</strong>, <strong>the</strong> next mentioned owner <strong>of</strong><br />

Mains, was probably a son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding Herbert,<br />

and according to old custom called after his paternal<br />
