On <strong>the</strong> eve <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> R formation, <strong>the</strong> Scottish clergy,<br />

hopeless <strong>of</strong> retaining tlie temporalities <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Church,<br />

set about disposing <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m as hi'st <strong>the</strong>y could.<br />

Accordingly, John Tailzeour, one ol' <strong>the</strong> prchendurs<br />

"<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ladye <strong>of</strong> Gallovay service," in Lincluden, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> consent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Provost and prehendars chajiterly<br />

assembled, granted a charter in favour <strong>of</strong> Roger<br />

<strong>Lindsay</strong>, in consideration <strong>of</strong> certain sums <strong>of</strong> money<br />

given by him for <strong>the</strong> making and repair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> orna-<br />

ments and o<strong>the</strong>r vestments belonging to <strong>the</strong> said<br />

prebend, and also for <strong>the</strong> repair <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Collegiate<br />

Church, bestowing on Roger and his heirs male, etc.,<br />

<strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eastwood <strong>of</strong> Rarscribc, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bank<br />

<strong>of</strong> Carborland, <strong>of</strong> Drummukhed, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Mains <strong>of</strong><br />

Suthik and Barmoss, extending annually in <strong>the</strong><br />

granter's rental to <strong>the</strong> sum <strong>of</strong> 52 merks. To hold in<br />

feu ferme and heritage <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> granter and his<br />

successors, prebends <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said prebendary [sic]— for<br />

<strong>the</strong> yearly rent <strong>of</strong> 52 merks, and 3s. 4d. in augmenta-<br />

tion. This charter is dated at Paris, Gth Aug. 1553.*<br />

A Roger <strong>Lindsay</strong>, probably a blood relation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

granter, was witness to charters <strong>of</strong> Michael, second<br />

laird <strong>of</strong> Fairgirth, in 1507 and ISOD.f In 1544-5<br />

Roger <strong>Lindsay</strong>, natural son <strong>of</strong> James <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Fairgirth, received letters <strong>of</strong> legitimation. ;[: The<br />

mentioned could scarcely have been he who acquired<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mains <strong>of</strong> Southwick ;<br />

<strong>the</strong> second might have been,<br />

but it is only because <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> occurrence in both families<br />
