enjoyed <strong>the</strong> confidence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> royal jiareuts, may have<br />

heen one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se, and <strong>the</strong>re is justification for sup-<br />

posing so in entries to be found in tlie Treasurer's<br />

and Exchequer accounts for <strong>the</strong> year 1515 <strong>of</strong> velvet<br />

supplied to her for making tunics for <strong>the</strong> king.* Slie<br />

was not employed as a sewing-woman merely, fur<br />

very soon his majesty had attained to <strong>the</strong> dio-nity <strong>of</strong><br />

tailor-made outer garments, while his "sarki.s" and<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r linen were <strong>the</strong> handiwork <strong>of</strong> Jonet Douglas, <strong>the</strong><br />

court sempstress and <strong>the</strong> wife i>i' Duvid Lind.say, <strong>the</strong><br />

King's Usher, afterwards Sir David <strong>the</strong> poet and<br />

Lyon King-<strong>of</strong>-Arms.<br />

As to how long Marion Bonkii remained in <strong>the</strong><br />

service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Court we have no information, but she<br />

was in possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands assigned to her until<br />

1543.t As early as 1529 her son, James, had become<br />

Master Falconer to King James V., and continued to<br />

hold <strong>the</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice after <strong>the</strong> accession <strong>of</strong> Queen Mary.t<br />

On <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> his mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> Master Falconer received<br />

in lieu <strong>of</strong> salary <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> lands which had<br />

been enjoyed for so long by his parents ;§ and on<br />
