John Lindway, a yourii^or son of the lirst hiinl of Fail-girth, was one of Mie falconers, pro})ahly the Master Falconer, of King James IV., at least as early as 14U0,*- He had for his fee a life-rent of tlie lands of Auchen- skeoch, Auchenloch, Auchenhay, ('lonyard, and Glen- stocking, all in the parishes of Southwick and Oolvend, and adjacent to Fairgirth.y He and his wife, Mariota or Marion Bonkil, had also a grant from the King of half of the £10 lands of lleidhewis, in the barony of Covington, on the resignati'-n of John Lindsay of Covington, who was probably a near relative. J On the death of the falconer in 1507 or 1508, Auchenskeoch and the other Galloway lands were let to his widow, § and on 24th February 1512-13 they were granted to her in life-rent ' for the gude and thankfull service done to ws and oure derest fallow the quene be oure lovit oratrice || and wedow Marioun Bonkle, the relict of umquhile Johnne Lindessay.' The lands were exempted from the jurisdiction of the Steward of Kirkcudbright ' Marioun's life, . . . becaus for all the dais of the said the King has command it hir to reraane in service with the quene.
