The ninth laird married (I) Nicolas, eldest<br />

daughter <strong>of</strong> Roger <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Mains, <strong>the</strong> contract<br />

being dated 21st October 10:^7.'- By her he had :—<br />

He married (2) Elizabeth Irving.jj<br />

James <strong>Lindsay</strong>, Tenth Laird <strong>of</strong> Fairgiiitii,<br />

was served heir to his fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> preceding laird, 6th<br />

seems to have been <strong>the</strong> last in<br />

possession ; for already <strong>the</strong> estates had been mort-<br />

gaged, and at <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> eighteenth century<br />

were in o<strong>the</strong>r hands.<br />

The Fairgirtu Lands.—The parish <strong>of</strong> Southwick,<br />

anciently, and even yet in <strong>the</strong> speech <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> people,<br />

called " Siddick," or " Suthik," was united to <strong>the</strong><br />

adjacent parish <strong>of</strong> Colvend in <strong>the</strong> seventeenth century.<br />

Bordering on <strong>the</strong> Solway between <strong>the</strong> Critfel range <strong>of</strong><br />

hills and <strong>the</strong> Water <strong>of</strong> Urr, <strong>the</strong> united parishes measure<br />

about nine miles long by seven and a half wide.<br />

About half <strong>of</strong> this area was in possession <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lindsay</strong>s<br />

from early in <strong>the</strong> fifteenth century until <strong>the</strong> latter<br />

half <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> seventeenth, when it gradually passed to<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r hands. This "land <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lindsay</strong>s " was no con-<br />

tinuous estate ;<br />

but detached properties <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> families<br />

<strong>of</strong> Barcloy, <strong>of</strong> Fairgirth, Auchenskeoch, and Mains<br />
