Jamks <strong>Lindsay</strong>, Fourth Laikd <strong>of</strong> FAiiunitin,<br />

was, we believe, <strong>the</strong> uncle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> third laird. The<br />

estate was now a very modest one, tor <strong>of</strong> Corsock and<br />

Auchenvey <strong>the</strong> property had been disposed <strong>of</strong>, and he<br />

held only <strong>the</strong> superiority. He added, however, <strong>the</strong><br />

lands <strong>of</strong> Ryes, in <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood <strong>of</strong> Fair;^irth.t<br />

Between 1531 and 1537 he married Margaret Cuirus,<br />

relict <strong>of</strong> Kentigern Murray <strong>of</strong> Broughton, who appears<br />

to have been a second wife.J<br />

John <strong>Lindsay</strong>, Fifth Laikd <strong>of</strong> Faiugirth, who<br />

was presumably a son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> })recediiig laird, was<br />

infeft in 1544-5, § From Elizabeth <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Cars-<br />

luith he obtained part <strong>of</strong> Gilkerscleuch.jj Beyond<br />

this we have no information regarding him.<br />

James <strong>Lindsay</strong>, Sixth Laird ov Fair(;irtii,<br />

was infeft in 1562, <strong>the</strong> estate having been in ward<br />

for eleven years. 'F We suppose him to have been a<br />

son or grandson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> preceding laird.<br />

About- this time John, eighth Lord Maxwell, was<br />

Warden <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> West Marches. The holder <strong>of</strong> tliis<br />

<strong>of</strong>fice was empowered to summon to his aid all <strong>the</strong><br />

men within his jurisdiction capable <strong>of</strong> military service,<br />

and in <strong>the</strong> exercise <strong>of</strong> this power he did not always<br />

draw a distinction between his <strong>of</strong>ficial and his private<br />

need. But apart even from his authority as warden,<br />
