92 THE IIOUSIC OF FAlUGlUTll. John Lindsay, Third Laird of Fairgirth, was a cliild of less than seven yeara of age wlien liis father died. Nevertheless the leases of the Crown lands which his father had held were continued to him in association with his mother and paternal uncle.* Three years after his grandfiither's death— in 1523 he was permitted to enter upon Carsluith.t and four years thereafter—in 1,'327— he had po.ssession of all the Fairgirth lands, although even at the latter date he was still a minor.| Such favours appear to have proceeded upon a liberal interpretation of an enactment passed during that invasion of England which ended * Excheq.
