burgh did not charge <strong>the</strong>mselves with <strong>the</strong> rent <strong>of</strong> a<br />

house which had belonged to <strong>the</strong> deceased Lazarenus<br />

de Grelis, a Lombard ; because, although it was <strong>the</strong><br />

property <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King, it was occupied by James<br />

<strong>Lindsay</strong> ; about which <strong>the</strong> Lords <strong>of</strong> Council were to<br />

be consulted.*<br />

This laird was a prominent figure in <strong>the</strong> public life<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stewartry.f Along witli William (jf Langmuir<br />

he was nominated by Parliament to retour <strong>the</strong> rents<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barons in that part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> country, J and <strong>the</strong>se<br />

two were also appointed Stewards-Depute to try an<br />

action between Lord Carlyle and George and David<br />

Herries, with respect to <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Terregles.§<br />

Besides his own estate, <strong>Lindsay</strong> held on lease <strong>the</strong><br />

crown lands <strong>of</strong> Corbarton (now Corbieton), Carlingwark,<br />

Clonyard and Auchenhay.|| In 1493 he was appointed<br />

to <strong>the</strong> important <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> Chamberlain <strong>of</strong> Galloway. 1l<br />

Only for eighteen months, however, did he personally<br />

discharge <strong>the</strong> duties. Afterwards, until his death in<br />

or about <strong>the</strong> year 1497, i\Ir James, his son, acted as<br />

his depute.**<br />
