FJOJHE province <strong>of</strong> Galloway, occupying at different<br />

tiii^ss a varying extent <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> south-western<br />

promontory <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>, enjoyed for centuries<br />

more or less independence under its native chiefs. Of<br />

<strong>the</strong>se ancient lords, <strong>the</strong> last was Alan, who died in<br />

1234, when <strong>the</strong> territory over which he had ruled fell<br />

to be divided among his three daughters. The tri-<br />

partite division, however, lasted only for a brief period,<br />

if, indeed, it ever really came into effect, for Christian,<br />

<strong>the</strong> youngest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sisters, having died in 124G, <strong>the</strong><br />

whole heritao^e was shared between <strong>the</strong> survivors, <strong>the</strong><br />

Water <strong>of</strong> Cree forming <strong>the</strong> boundary between <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

respective portions. Galloway below Cree, as it was<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficially designated—what is now <strong>the</strong> county <strong>of</strong> Kirk-<br />

cudbright—was <strong>the</strong> share <strong>of</strong> Devorgilhi, <strong>the</strong> eldest <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> co-heiresses. Devorgilla married John Balllol <strong>of</strong><br />

Barnard Castle, Yorkshire ; and at <strong>the</strong> principal place<br />

<strong>of</strong> her Galloway domains, <strong>the</strong> Castle <strong>of</strong> Buittle, on <strong>the</strong><br />

AVater <strong>of</strong> Urr, was born her son, John Balliol, <strong>the</strong><br />

future king <strong>of</strong> <strong>Scotland</strong>. Galloway above Cree—what<br />

is now Wigtownshire—fell to Helena, <strong>the</strong> half-sister <strong>of</strong><br />

Devorgilla. She was <strong>the</strong> wife <strong>of</strong> lloger de Quincy,<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Winchester, and had issue three daughters<br />

only. On <strong>the</strong> death <strong>of</strong> Do Quincy, John Comyn, Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Buchan, who had married one <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> daughters, got
