Pollok <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Murrays and Ileadhouse, and<br />

he, or his son and successor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same name, made<br />

o<strong>the</strong>r additions to <strong>the</strong> estates. *''<br />

The first laird <strong>of</strong> Crossbasket appears frequently on<br />

<strong>the</strong> inquests <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> neighbourhood, and as witnessing<br />

<strong>the</strong> charters and o<strong>the</strong>r writs <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> local landholders, f<br />

by which it is evident that he was a man <strong>of</strong> consider-<br />

able standing. He died sometime between 1517 and<br />

1530. His wife was Euphemia Maxwell, and he had<br />

issue<br />

Alexander <strong>Lindsay</strong>, <strong>the</strong> son <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> first laird <strong>of</strong><br />

Crossbasket, presumably succeeded his fa<strong>the</strong>r, but <strong>the</strong><br />

contemporary notices hi<strong>the</strong>rto discovered alford no clue<br />

to enable us to distinguish between <strong>the</strong> two Alex-<br />

anders. In <strong>the</strong> absence <strong>of</strong> exact information, it is also<br />

merely a presumption that he was <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

(1) Robert, <strong>of</strong> Crossbasket, and aftci wards <strong>of</strong> Duurod.<br />

(2) (?) ^[r James, vicar <strong>of</strong> Cambuslaug.<br />

Robert <strong>Lindsay</strong> was infeffc in <strong>the</strong> Crossbasket<br />

estates in 1532. § In 1537 he had become liable to<br />

<strong>the</strong> Crown for £240, <strong>the</strong> rent <strong>of</strong> Crossbasket for eight<br />

years, due to <strong>the</strong> King by reason <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> barony <strong>of</strong><br />

Hamilton being in ward. For payment <strong>of</strong> this his<br />

lands <strong>of</strong> Over Snar and Glenkip, in <strong>the</strong> parish <strong>of</strong><br />
