near Ilairmyres, parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original Thornton, still<br />

bear <strong>the</strong> same names.<br />

(The present Thornton Hall may have been " Tait's"<br />

Thornton, and <strong>the</strong> present Thornton " Wainock's<br />

Thornton, <strong>the</strong> converse <strong>of</strong> what is stated above. Tlie<br />

identification is uncertain.)<br />

A family <strong>of</strong> <strong>Lindsay</strong>s, presumably cadets <strong>of</strong> Dunrod,<br />

were designated "<strong>of</strong> Thornton." David <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

lived in <strong>the</strong> 15th century. His son, Alexander,<br />

witnessed a charter in 1494. '• Andrew <strong>Lindsay</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Thornton was living in 1518. f Li 157;J, ano<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Andrew <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Thornton and Jonett PoUok, his<br />

wife, are mentioned as holding <strong>the</strong> lands <strong>of</strong> Over<br />

Darnley under a reversion. J<br />

Easter Kittochside :<br />

The<br />

lands <strong>of</strong> Kittochside<br />

lying along <strong>the</strong> Kittoch Burn near <strong>the</strong> villiige <strong>of</strong> Busby<br />

were divided between <strong>the</strong> <strong>Lindsay</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Dimrod and<br />

<strong>the</strong> Mures <strong>of</strong> Caldwell. The Dunrod portion, Easter<br />

Kittochside, was valued at G merks in <strong>the</strong> Old Extent. §<br />

About <strong>the</strong> year 1500, George <strong>Lindsay</strong> was fined for<br />

not giving suit for his lands <strong>of</strong> Kittochside. || This<br />

George was probably <strong>the</strong> apparent heir <strong>of</strong> Dunrod at<br />

that time, and <strong>the</strong> fa<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixth laird. In 1540,<br />

when David, <strong>the</strong> seventh laird, with consent <strong>of</strong> his<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r, <strong>the</strong> life-tenant, was about to dispose <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

estates to Robert <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Crossbasket, he was inter-<br />

dicted from doing so by David <strong>Lindsay</strong>, his fa<strong>the</strong>r's<br />
