good to be missed. So tbe provost and magistrates,<br />

baving made formal searcb for tbe arcbbisbojj at tbe<br />

episcopal palace and at tbe catbedral, and baving failed<br />

to find bim, proceeded to cboose tbe ])ailies tbemselves.<br />

By witnessing tbe notarial instrument setting forth<br />

tbe transaction, tbe provost and bis two bro<strong>the</strong>rs<br />

assumed a large sbare <strong>of</strong> tbe responsibility.* Altbough<br />

tbe privilege usurped in tbis way was afterwards lost<br />

for a time, tbe precedent was not without value in <strong>the</strong><br />

later settlement <strong>of</strong> municipal government.<br />

Immediately to tbe north <strong>of</strong> tbe old College <strong>of</strong><br />

Glasgow <strong>the</strong>re stood in <strong>the</strong> sixteenth century an ancient<br />

mansion belonging to <strong>the</strong> College, and known as Arthur-<br />

lees Place. Tbis Provost <strong>Lindsay</strong> acquired in feu from<br />

<strong>the</strong> Principal and Regents ; and he may have used it<br />

as his town house in <strong>the</strong> last year <strong>of</strong> his provostship,<br />

1562, but two years later he resigned it again to <strong>the</strong><br />

superiors in redemption <strong>of</strong> a mortgage over bis lands <strong>of</strong><br />

West Pogerton. f<br />

In 1570 Robert <strong>Lindsay</strong> <strong>of</strong> Dunrod was present at<br />

<strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> tbe Protestant leaders at which Mat<strong>the</strong>w,<br />

Earl <strong>of</strong> Lennox, was chosen Regent in room <strong>of</strong> tbe Earl<br />

<strong>of</strong> Moray, assasinated by Hamilton <strong>of</strong> Bothwellhaugh. |<br />

The election was tbe signal for tbe outbreak <strong>of</strong> civil<br />

war. There is no mention <strong>of</strong> Dunrod's doings in tbe<br />

sanguinary struggle tliat ensued, but it is impossible<br />

that a man <strong>of</strong> his public spirit could have remained<br />
