28 TIIL" HOUSE OF DUNllOD.<br />

been sucli a restoration, <strong>the</strong> Catholic cluigy niinlit liave<br />

resumed <strong>the</strong>ir olliccs in Glasgow, but little iiictjnimoded<br />

by <strong>the</strong> slight injury that <strong>the</strong> Chuich buildings had<br />

suffered <strong>the</strong>re. Suih was <strong>the</strong> actual if not also <strong>the</strong><br />

intended effect <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> appointment as provost <strong>of</strong> a<br />

Protestant whom we have reason to believe was a man<br />

<strong>of</strong> temperate and judicious mind.<br />

The laird <strong>of</strong> Dun rod was present at <strong>the</strong> Convention<br />

<strong>of</strong> 1560, which a})proved <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Confession <strong>of</strong> Faith " as<br />

hailsome and sound doctrine, groundit upon <strong>the</strong> in-<br />

fallible trewth <strong>of</strong> Godis word "<br />

; <strong>the</strong> first public recognition<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> cause <strong>of</strong> reform in religion.* A month<br />

before <strong>the</strong> meeting <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Convention <strong>the</strong> Archbishop<br />

<strong>of</strong> Glasgow had conveyed away to a [Jlace <strong>of</strong> safety <strong>the</strong><br />

church plate and valuable vestments <strong>of</strong> his ca<strong>the</strong>dral, f<br />

The removal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> treasures was efl'ected none too<br />

soon ; for <strong>the</strong> Lords <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Congiegation issued orders<br />

that altars, images, and whatever savoured <strong>of</strong> idolatry,<br />

should be destroyed. At <strong>the</strong> same tinu; <strong>the</strong>y forbade<br />

injury to <strong>the</strong> fabrics <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> churches ; but it was rarely<br />

possible to restrain <strong>the</strong> " rascal multitude " within <strong>the</strong><br />

limits set by <strong>the</strong>ir leaders.<br />

The Earls <strong>of</strong> Arran, Argyle, and Glencairn went to<br />

<strong>the</strong> West to see to <strong>the</strong> execution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> order, and <strong>the</strong><br />

ruined Abbeys <strong>of</strong> Paisley, Kilwinning, and Crossraguel<br />

testified to <strong>the</strong> thoroughness with which <strong>the</strong> work was<br />

done. Glasgow <strong>of</strong>fered a still more promising field for<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir activities. It was largely a place <strong>of</strong> ecclesiastical<br />

buildings. There were <strong>the</strong> ca<strong>the</strong>dral, <strong>the</strong> archbishop's<br />

palace, some score <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> stately manses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> prebend-<br />

aries, <strong>the</strong> monasteries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Black and <strong>the</strong> Grey Friars,<br />
