2 HM the Queen has appointed Mrs Caroline Susan Reynolds of Leighton Hall as the High Sheriff of Lancashire for 2009. Mrs Reynolds worked for the BBC World Service until 1975 when she took over the management of Leighton Hall near Carnforth, which she runs with her husband a member of the Gillow family of furniture fame. She is involved with several charities and has a wide range of artistic interests. Mrs Reynolds was sworn in on April 7th when her shield of arms illustrated on the right was placed in the Shire Hall. The gothic pinnacles allude to Leighton Hall. Unlike previous ladies holding this office, there is no indication of her husband’s armorial bearings. Note that her arms are on a shield and not a lozenge or cartouche. The official blazon reads: Vert on a chevron between three doves each supporting with the dexter foot a gothic pinnacle or three roses gules barbed and seeded proper. HIGH SHERIFF FOR LANCASHIRE THE ARMS OF AN ARCHDEACON We do not often show the arms of an Archdeacon - in fact this may be a first! Those illustrated belong to The Venerable Peter Delaney MBE, who retired in June as Archdeacon of London. The Bishop of London then bestowed upon him the title of Archdeacon Emeritus. He continues his ministry as priestin-charge of the church of St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London. The arms were granted in June 2001, the agent being Hubert Chesshyre. The blazon is as follows: Argent a cross voided throughout in dexter chief a Rustre Gules over all in centre point an Olive Wreath Vert enclosing a plate charged with a lily slipped and leaved also Vert. For a crest: Beneath a heraldic Dolphin embowed Vert finned Gules a cushion Argent fretted and tasselled Gules. APPOINTMENT OF GARTER It was announced recently that HM The Queen had been pleased to appoint Thomas Woodcock Esq LVO, currently Norroy and Ulster King of Arms, to be the successor to Peter Gwynn Jones Esq CVO as Garter Principal King of Arms, when the latter retires at the end of March 2010. Mr Woodcock has worked in the College of Arms since 1975 and has been Norroy and Ulster King of Arms since 1997. Since the third King of Arms, Hubert Chesshyre Esq LVO currently Clarenceux King of Arms, is also due to retire next year this will mean there should be two further appointments as territorial Kings of Arms with effect from 2010. We look forward to the continuance of our friendly relations with the College under its new senior management team. HERALDIC WEEKEND 2010 The Congress Committee has great pleasure in announcing that the Society’s next Heraldic Congress is to be held at from Thursday 12th to Sunday 15th August 2010.
