Shawnee State University was created because of the vision, 

support, and generosity of the people of Ohio – from legislators 

like Vern Riffe who passionately pursued the vision of a university 

in southern Ohio, to members of our community who supported 

the efforts to make a local university a reality, and you, our 

donors, who enlivened the vision with gifts of money and time. 

Because of this dynamic combination, Shawnee State was able to 

celebrate its 25th anniversary in 2011 and continue to position 

itself for the future in 2012. 

Over the past couple of years, we have had a unique opportunity 

to reflect on where we’ve been – and recognize and remember the 

people who were with us through the years. 

We prepared this year’s biennial report, to provide you with a 

look back – as well as a look ahead – and to share a clear picture 

of the impact of your gifts and your continued support.

An Outstanding Beginning 

In April of 1986 Gov. Richard Celeste signed House Bill 739, 

a bill introduced by Speaker Vern Riffe to create Shawnee State 

University as Ohio’s 13th public university. 

Shawnee State’s roots began in 1945 when community leaders 

invited Ohio University to establish an academic presence 

in Portsmouth. Ohio University eventually opened a branch 

campus on Second Street in Massie Hall. The Scioto Technical 

College, which opened in 1971, merged with Ohio University 

in 1975 to form Shawnee State Community College. Thanks to 

the passion and vision of Rep. Vern Riffe, Gov. Jim Rhodes, and 

many others, Shawnee State Community College became SSU. 

The community watched as building after building appeared on 

Second Street, and faculty and staff were recruited to serve our 

students. The desire to make higher education easily accessible 

to the people of southern Ohio started with visionary pioneers 

who believed a university would transform the people and the 

economy of the region.

Outstanding Academic 

Programs 

Today, SSU offers over eighty different bachelor and associate 

degree programs and three master’s degrees, one in occupational 

therapy and two in teacher education. 

In 2010, the Ohio Board of Regents recognized Shawnee State 

University as a Center of Excellence in Immersive Technology, 

which includes SSU’s programs in digital simulation and 

gaming, the new state-of-the-art Motion Capture Studio, and 

SSU’s developing Immersive Technology and Arts Commercial 

Center. SSU is helping to bring advanced manufacturing jobs 

in nanotechnology and the polymer industry to Ohio through 

applied research in the plastics engineering technology program. 

SSU’s pre-med program is recognized in the state, and more than 

90% of the pre-med graduates are accepted to medical school. 

Our programs in health sciences and education have high state 

board exam pass rates. SSU’s academic programs are gaining 

recognition and a reputation for preparing students for successful 

futures. 


Shawnee State University was ranked #7 in the nation 

by Princeton Review for its undergraduate game design 

program.

Outstanding Growth 

Since 1986, SSU has experienced constant growth. In the past 

10 years enrollment has exploded, growing by more than 39%. 

More than 4,600 students are presently enrolled, and more 

than 1,000 students live on campus. Students come to Shawnee 

State from nearly every county in Ohio, from nearly every state 

in the country, and from more than 20 different countries. 

Opportunities exist for SSU students to study abroad as well. 

SSU’s campus has grown from a single structure, in 1965, to 

36 buildings including student housing. Expansion continues, 

guided by a Master Facilities Plan that addresses current and 

future student and staff needs. SSU now employs 300 full and 

part-time faculty members and 300 staff members. 


Housing has grown by nearly 85% in 

the past five years with nearly 1,000 

students now living on campus. 

SSU has added several degree programs 

in recent years, including master’s 

degrees in education and occupational 

therapy and undergraduate programs 

in religion and philosophy and in 

musical theatre.

Outstanding Student focus 

and Value 

Shawnee State is one of the best academic values in Ohio – 

combining affordable tuition with excellence in education. 

SSU also awards more than $2 million in scholarships each 

year, many as a result of generous donors, which make higher 

education more accessible. As one of the lowest cost universities 

in the state, Shawnee State is considered an excellent value for 

an outstanding education. 

Small classes and personalized attention from faculty and staff, 

who are focused on student success, make it easy for students to 

be known on campus and supported in their academic pursuits.

Outstanding Student life 

University students have many ways to enjoy a full 

social life outside the classroom. More than 45 student 

clubs and organizations, sports teams, intramural teams, 

sororities, and a fraternity on campus provide students 

with opportunities that foster growth and development. 

SSU provides ways for students to participate in civic 

leadership development and activities that promote 

understanding of other cultures and international life. 

The SSU Center for Community Service, the Women’s 

Center, and the Student Activities & Cross Cultural 

Inclusion support students’ specific interests. 

Plays, concerts, and art exhibits give students a chance to 

be involved in the performing and visual arts. A student 

newspaper and a student literary magazine also provide 

opportunities for students to express their writing talents. 

Many student activities and all student services are 

conveniently located in the newly renovated and 

expanded University Center. 

Evidence of donor support for the renovation and 

expansion of the University Center can be found 

throughout the facility and includes, among other 

displays, a clever exhibit of the University’s mascot Shawn 

E. Bear donated by J. William McKinley. 

Students support the Shawnee State Bears at home 

and away games alike, as the Bears compete in 13 

intercollegiate men’s and women’s sports in the NAIA 

Division I Mid-South Conference. Teams compete in 

basketball, soccer, baseball, softball, volleyball, cross 

country, track, golf, and tennis.

In order to thrive in today’s world, higher education needs 

support – especially financial support – to build academic 

programs and programs that serve the community, to provide 

adequate living and learning facilities that accommodate 

growth, and to provide scholarships that make higher education 

more accessible to students. 

Shawnee State launched its first capital campaign in 1989. 

Without a large Alumni Association to lead the effort, SSU 

relied on the community for its primary support. The “Crossing 

the Threshold” campaign set a $2 million goal, and raised $3.12 

million, setting the tone for two campaigns that would follow. 

“Reach for the Stars” kicked off in 1994 and reached its goal 

of $5.9 million in June of 1996. This campaign built the Clark 

Planetarium, one of the university’s most unique features. 

In 2005, SSU set an ambitious development goal of $12 

million. The campaign, called “Poised for Tomorrow,” exceeded 

expectations with $16 million raised by May 2008. 

As SSU looks toward the future, the greatest need is for 

unrestricted funds that can be used to meet institutional 

priorities associated with the Master Facilities Plan. Community 

members, corporations, and alumni can direct their gifts to 

The Shawnee Fund. Every gift, no matter the size, benefits the 

4,600 students SSU serves.

Shawnee State alumni now number more than 13,500. 

Our graduates are leaders who make a difference in their 

communities across the country and throughout the world. 

Whether teaching in South Korea and China, using dental 

hygiene degrees to improve the health of children in Haiti, 

or working in Major League Baseball or on the PGA Tour, 

Bear alumni are represented across a range of professions and 

fields, from small businesses to Fortune 100 corporations. 

Shawnee State students stand out in the places where they 

live and work.

Outstanding Vision 

for the future 

In 2007, the University developed a Master Facilities Plan to 

provide a systematic effort to address current and future needs 

and to lay the framework for planned growth. In addition to 

expanding and renovating the University Center, thanks to 

a gift from Dr. William Daehler, the University was able to 

construct the Dr. William E. Daehler Tennis Center on campus. 

The Motion Capture Studio, part of the Immersive Technology 

and Arts Commercial Center, was also completed. 

A new academic building on Fourth Street was opened to provide 

needed classroom space for all teacher education courses and 

faculty offices. Preliminary planning has begun for a new, on 

campus classroom and laboratory building, to meet the needs 

in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) 

disciplines. And, as more and more students decide to live on 

campus, plans are underway to provide additional housing. 

In 2011, Shawnee State accepted the gift of a building in 

downtown Portsmouth to take community-based services and 

programming off campus and into the community. 

Growth is the SSU vision for students, facilities, programs, 

faculty and staff. As the University grows, so does the desire 

to create a more cohesive living and learning environment that 

meets the needs of the increasingly diverse student population.

Assistance to Student Athletes 

Edward and Ruth Kirkendall were both Golden Bears and staunch 

supporters of Shawnee State University athletics. Because of their affinity 

for Shawnee State athletes, the Estate of Ruth Kirkendall made a gift 

of nearly $100,000 to the SSU Development Foundation to establish 

an athletic scholarship. This is the first endowed scholarship at SSU

New AEP Ohio Scholarship to Develop 

Ohio Workforce 

AEP Ohio, a unit of American Electric Power (NYSE: AEP), through the 

AEP Foundation, donated $25,000 in scholarship funds to the Shawnee 

State University Development Foundation as part of a workforce 

development initiative designed to help low income Ohioans compete 

for jobs in an evolving economy. Scholarships will be awarded to those 

who are seeking an education or upgrading their skills, particularly in

SSU and the Development Foundation partnered with the 

community this year to raise funds for and host the third annual 

Gene Bennett Baseball Classic at historic Branch Rickey Park.

McKinleys Establish New Scholarships 

Joseph McKinley of Lancaster, Ohio, and Mary Jane McKinley 

of Nelsonville, Ohio, both believe in the value of education and 

recognize the unique value provided by a Shawnee State education. 

In memory of their family members who were accomplished 

and blazed the trail for other women in the fields of education, 

healthcare, and athletics, Joe and Mary Jane established three new 

scholarships: Ruth Malone Nursing Scholarship, Ruth Malone 

Women’s Basketball Scholarship, and the Anna Lou McKinley 

Business Scholarship. 

Fluor - B&W Portsmouth Partners With 

SSU in Support of Math 

Through a donation from Fluor - B&W Portsmouth, LLC, with 

matching support from the Development Foundation, SSU’s 

math department launched a pilot Math Bridge Program for 

incoming freshmen. Students in the program used a web-based 

placement test to assess skills and were tutored in subjects they 

found difficult. The program gives students the opportunity to 

improve and refresh their math skills and, in many cases, improve 

their math placement.

Kramers Establish Business Scholarship 

The late Jean and Robert Kramer established the Robert and Jean Kramer Business Scholarship 

through an estate gift to the College of Professional Studies. 

The Kramers both graduated from Portsmouth High School. Robert was a lifelong learner 

and while he worked at Time Loan, he pursued his education at Ohio University Portsmouth 

Branch. After receiving his associate’s degree, Robert joined Goodyear Atomic Energy Plant 

where he worked until his retirement. In the meantime, he continued going to college and got 

his bachelor’s degree when he was in his 50s. Jean was a homemaker and stay-at-home mom 

to 2 daughters, then worked for Household Finance where she retired in 1976. The couple 

celebrated their 69th wedding anniversary in August 2010. Robert passed away in December 

of that year. Jean passed away in December 2012. The Kramer’s daughter Lynn King lives in 

New Jersey and daughter Kaye Osborne lives in Portsmouth. 

Kay Beegan Physical Therapist Assistant Scholarship 

Students in the SSU Physical Therapist Assistant Program helped to establish a new scholarship 

named in honor of long-time faculty member Kay Beegan.

Mid Rader Makes Generous Shawnee Fund Gift 

Eighteen-year Shawnee State veteran Randy Warman, who most recently served as Director of 

Student Activities, makes a donation to Shawnee State University’s Development Foundation 

executive director Eric Braun on behalf of his aunt, Mildred “Mid” Warman Rader, who died 

last October just five days short of her 106th birthday. Mid believed strongly in the role of 

higher education and generously donated $10,000 to the University’s unrestricted fund.

Visiting Alumni Across the Country 

In 2011 and 2012, President Morris and the Shawnee 

State University Alumni Association traveled to visit with 

alumni across the country and establish regional alumni 

clubs in support of the Development Foundation’s 

mission to make friends and raise funds in support of 

Shawnee State. SSU alumni live and work in 48 states. 

CIPA Study Abroad Fund 

A Night in Havana was the theme of the 2012 President’s 

Gala. The evening raised over $36,000 in support of a 

new Study Abroad Fund. The fund supports Shawnee 

State students travelling to complete coursework 

through the SSU Center for International Programs and 

Activities (CIPA). 

Alumni Giving 

SSU undergraduates call alumni, parents, and friends to 

raise support for The Shawnee Fund during the 2012 

Fall Phonathon. Their efforts raised support from nearly 

400 alumni.
