After all, they are emblematic of our way of life and come in lots of varieties, from round to rectangle, gabled to gambrel, fieldstone to wood. Now, many are being jazzed up with the addition of quilts. Not the fluffy, keep you warm on a cold night variety, but rather an 8 by 8 foot wood piece of art (or some other square configuration) affixed to the side of a barn for all to see. Often created by volunteers, all that’s needed is a willing barn owner to donate hanging space, and there have been lots of willing types in these parts. In fact, Wisconsin is considered a leader in this rural art movement, and we think that’s as it should be given it honors the agri way of life. Barn quilt tours are becoming so popular for motorcoach outings and Sunday afternoon drives that communities have even started putting out maps for self-guided tours that include stories about the barns, the inspirations for the quilt designs, and profiles of the people who created them. This symbol of comfort is showing up in Green County big time, with a whopping 115 plus barns are on display there. Shawano County isn’t far behind with more than 100 barn quilts, and Rock County has 70 and counting. Lafayette County is using its 60 barn quilts to promote the culture and history of the area. Barn quilts in Kewaunee County appear on historically significant barns. In Marquette County, there are some 40 barn quilts and murals. Columbia County is new to this but already you can see how artistic expression is being encouraged in the creation of their first half-dozen barn quilts. Add Door, Walworth and Racine Counties to round out your barn quilt itinerary. This is an art form that makes people feel good about where they live, and we dare say makes visitors feel good about where they visit too.
