ART&
CRAFT
FAIRS
DIRECTORY
Welcome!
As Governor, it is always a pleasure providing
visitors with another reason to visit Wisconsin
and this time I invite you to discover our arts.
This year will mark 37 years that the Art &
Craft Fairs Directory has provided an
invaluable guide to art enthusiasts, tourists
and artists alike and one that I hope you will
use again and again.
Travel our highways and discover a plein air
festival in Door County or folk art at the Paul
Bunyan Fest in Eagle River as we celebrate an
industry that not only employs 50,000 people
in our state but showcases a truly renewable
resource – creativity and imagination. Whether
you prefer music, fine arts or crafts in one of
our small towns or urban centers, you will find
it listed in this comprehensive guide.
Join us where the arts are alive and vibrant
and where our artists produce tangible
memories for you to take home after your visit.
Sincerely,
Scott Walker
Governor
ASHLAND MURAL WALK.
The Art of Discovery –
DIY Tours
Art can show up in the most unexpected
places. Maybe it’s just a Sunday drive or
running an errand and taking a wrong turn,
and suddenly a burst of color catches the
corner of your eye. Before you know it, a 20’
mural on the side of a building pops into
view. That’s the Art of Discovery.
Sometimes historic, sometimes futuristic
but always fun, many towns are showing their
true colors in murals, sculptures or installations
that form a DIY tour of art, just waiting
to lead you on at your own pace. “Open” for
viewing 24/7/365, we’ll give you a hint and let
your inner explorer provide direction.
Barn Quilts of Wisconsin
Wisconsinites consider barns an art form
unto themselves. After all, they are emblematic
of our way of life and come in lots of varieties,
from round to rectangle, gabled to
gambrel, fieldstone to wood. Now, many are
being jazzed up with the addition of quilts.
Not the fluffy, keep you warm on a cold night
variety, but rather an 8 by 8 foot wood piece
of art (or some other square configuration)
affixed to the side of a barn for all to see.
Often created by volunteers, all that’s
needed is a willing barn owner to donate
hanging space, and there have been lots of
willing types in these parts. In fact, Wisconsin
is considered a leader in this rural art
movement, and we think that’s as it should
be given it honors the agri way of life.
Barn quilt tours are becoming so popular
for motorcoach outings and Sunday afternoon
drives that communities have even
started putting out maps for self-guided
tours that include stories about the barns,
the inspirations for the quilt designs, and
profiles of the people who created them.
This symbol of comfort is showing up in
Green County big time, with a whopping 115
plus barns are on display there. Shawano
County isn’t far behind with more than 100
barn quilts, and Rock County has 70 and
counting. Lafayette County is using its 60
barn quilts to promote the culture and history
of the area. Barn quilts in Kewaunee
County appear on historically significant
barns. In Marquette County, there are some
40 barn quilts and murals. Columbia County
is new to this but already you can see how
artistic expression is being encouraged in
the creation of their first half-dozen barn
quilts. Add Door, Walworth and Racine Counties
to round out your barn quilt itinerary.
This is an art form that makes people feel
good about where they live, and we dare say
makes visitors feel good about where they
visit too.

Art Schools in Wisconsin
The pristine beauty of Wisconsin continues to serve as inspiration and muse to over 3,000 Wisconsin
artists. Whether it’s the rustic environment of the Northwoods or the rolling hills of southern Dane
County, Wisconsin’s landscape captivates an artist’s eye. Should a desire to experience the artistic
process first-hand awaken in you, one of the many schools found in Wisconsin can answer this call.
can learn, reflect and wonder. http://theclearing.org
Wisconsin’s Public Art
Wisconsin has a wealth of art that truly belongs
to the people. Statues and monuments
have long decorated our parks and government
buildings. Since 1980, over 1,000 separate
pieces of public art have been added
and installed where it’s accessible to everyone.
Some are hidden in plain view, so much
a piece of daily life that you may not recognize
it.
Whether it’s a glass sculpture by former
UW Alum Dale Chihuly, the mathematically
inspired Fibonacci Chimes located in the Institute
for Discovery, or a 1931 bubbler designed
by Vilas Zoo director Fred
Winkelmann, it’s waiting for discovery.
Let it tickle your imagination, capture you
in its creative web and engage all your
senses. Wisconsin’s art is begging you to
come and explore. Finding this fun is easy!
Indigenous or Native Art of Wisconsin
Native American art is about evolution. While works by Wisconsin Native artists can be rooted in tradition,
it also has important things to say about the modern world and the future. Some Native Wisconsin
artists take the traditional and lend it a new twist, for art is created in the present, not
frozen in time.
Going to the original source of art will always provide you with an experience – it’s where stories
can be shared and mutual understandings grow. Here, you can learn from the artists themselves
and celebrate Wisconsin’s history through its diverse culture. We encourage you to explore further.
Morrow’s Native Art, Hayward
Artist and teacher Ramona Morrow of the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and
Yankton Sioux, provides gallery space for her Cattail dolls along with numerous Native artists from
the Hayward area. Morrow’s offers a wide variety of “Hand Crafted” Native American art including
bead work, birch and ash baskets, headdresses, regalia, moccasins, cradle boards, dream catchers
and paintings. 715/699-4671. www.morrowsnativeart.net
Native Spirit Gifts & Gallery, Bayfield
Native Spirit Gifts & Gallery calls out to the traveler seeking fine Native arts. Located on the Red
Cliff Indian Reservation, this gallery offers traditional Anishinabe Ojibwe (Chippewa) art from the
Great Lakes Region. Works include bead work, locally made birch bark baskets, full size handcrafted
birch bark canoes, dream catchers, quill boxes, books, and music. A cultural display provides
visual education for deeper understanding. www.hawkdancer.com/nsgg.htm
Woodland Indian Art Center, Lac du Flambeau
Woodland Indian Art Center is home to a gallery featuring Native Woodland regional artwork as
well as a thriving cultural center. Both traditional and contemporary artwork is represented in its
carvings, birch bark baskets, jewelry, paintings and bead work. Additionally, classes, workshops and
demonstrations in music, writing and dancing round out this center’s offerings. Whether you are a
collector or student of fine Native artwork, Woodland Indian Art Center can assist you.
Chief Oshkosh Native American Arts, Egg Harbor
Chief Oshkosh in Egg Harbor has been an outlet for Wisconsin Native American artists for over 60
years. Roy Oshkosh, leader of the Menominee Nation, established the business as Chief Oshkosh
Trading Post on land once popular as a summer site for Native Americans. Today, Oneida artist and
teacher Colleen Bins is slowly reshaping its future with an emphasis on the Woodland region of native
peoples. The gallery features works by watercolorist Dawn Dark Mountain of Madison, painter
Mary Prescott, doll maker Judith Jourdan of Oneida, and wooden flute maker Michael Farmer of Baileys
Harbor. An amphitheater in back provides space for performance art. 920/686-3240
Indian Summer Festival (September 6-8, 2013), Milwaukee’s Lakefront
Indian Summer Festival is the state’s largest American Indian cultural event celebrating the traditions,
foods, games, stories, and art of Native Americans. The festival’s Circle of Art exhibit features
fine art curated from Native artists across North America through a juried process. In addition,
artisans demonstrate their crafts from wood carving, basket weaving and beadwork to pottery.
Art on the March
ROBB FISCHER
Dotted throughout the rolling hillsides,
forests and lakeshores of Wisconsin are studios
where artists create their works and at
special times of the year open their doors to
arts enthusiasts to explore. North, south,
east or west, your choice of direction is the
right one – for studio locations are as diverse
as the medium artists use in their creations.
Getting started is easy – may we suggest
a sense of adventure and love of discovery?
So take the plunge and connect the dots
from art to Wisconsin to you.
Plein Air or Making Art
“In the Open Air”
Art. It’s not magic, it’s a process. It’s a skill
that can be taught and observed in action.
Wisconsin’s natural beauty sets the stage for
our plein air artists who seek to capture all the
great outdoors has to offer in real time, on location,
where bug spray may be just as important
as green paint and brushes.
Want to know “how do they do that?” This is
the time and place to learn from the experts.
Generally lasting 3-5 days, plein air festivals
welcome those who want to know more, and
welcome your questions while letting you observe
first-hand the mechanics and skill that
are the building blocks of creative expression.
Each year, the number of plein air events
grows. Some are competitions where prize
money is awarded, others are community fund
raisers where arts enthusiasts can bid on fresh
off the brush artwork. But always, it is the
artist taking on nature rain or shine.
We will set you on a path with some dates to
mark on your calendar then hope you’ll tap into
the Wisconsin Plein Air Painters Association’s
website – http://wipapa.blogspot.com/ – where
the latest events are listed. Who knows, you
may even be inspired to join in the fun.
LET YOUR
(ECO) CONSCIENCE
IN WISCONSIN
April 22, 1970. The first Earth Day.
Founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson of
Wisconsin to raise environmental
consciousness.
Wisconsinites continue to dig in to the
Earth Day tenets of preserving the
environment and enhancing our quality
of life.
That brings us to the notion of an ecofriendly
vacation, a concept the
Wisconsin Department of Tourism
pioneered when it launched Travel Green
Wisconsin in 2006. Travel Green was
the first certification program in the
country that went beyond
accommodations to include tourism
businesses of all sorts-events,
attractions, restaurants, and everything
in between.
So if leaving a lighter footprint is
important to you, then consider
patronizing the hundreds of Travel Green
Wisconsin certified businesses when
visiting. Visit travelwisconsin.com for
a listing.
To summarize: Go green. Have fun.
Rest easy.
