into Mare JEgeenm, or Archipelago. It is<br />

called Theulranteus, from Thcutras, king<br />

falls into the Euripus, or Strait of Negro-<br />

pont. It was sacred to the muses, accord<br />

ing to Pliny.<br />

92. Erymantho. A river, town, and<br />

mountain of Arcadia. Upon this moun<br />

tain Hercules killed the noted wild boar.<br />

93. Xanihuf. A river of Troy, large<br />

and rapid, which rises in Mount Ida. It<br />

was called Xanthus by the gods, and Sca-<br />

mander by men. In the Trojan war Vul<br />

can set it on fire; hence the poet says<br />

arturusque iterum.<br />

93. Lycormas. A river of ./Etolia, with<br />

sands of a golden color; hence called fa-<br />

vua Lycormas.<br />

64. MoMndros. A river of Asia Minor<br />

which rises in Phrygia, and running west<br />

erly, receives many streams on both oanks,<br />

and empties into Mare JEgteum, the Archi<br />

pelago. It has six hundred windings, and<br />

is said to have suggested to Daedalus the<br />

idea of the Cretan Labyrinth. The word<br />

to meander is derived from this river.<br />

95. Melas. A river of Mygdonia, which<br />

is reputed to render the wool of sheep that<br />

drank it black. Hence its name jy three mouths.<br />

106. Padum. The Po. called by the<br />

Greeks Eridanus, is the chief river of Italy.<br />
