Early Evolution of Birds: Roundtable Discussion The final day of the Washington, D.C, meeting of the Society of Avian Paleontology and Evolution (7 June 1996) was organized by Peter Wellnhofer and was devoted to Mesozoic birds and avian origins. The morning session consisted of individual paper presentations, some of which appear elsewhere in this volume. The afternoon session was given over to a roundtable discussion in which the participants were gathered in an atmosphere conducive to audience participation. The roundtable consisted of three parts, each with a discussion leader who outlined the problems to be considered and who invited comment. The entire roundtable was recorded on audio- and videotapes, which were later used by the discussion leaders to produce the following partial transcripts and summaries. There was broad participation in the discussion. Those who are cited directly in the transcripts are listed below in alphabetical order by surname.
