1 IN the year from the Lord's <strong>in</strong>carnation 9 6 9, <strong>in</strong> the reign of<br />

Ethelred, k<strong>in</strong>g of the English, Malcolm, k<strong>in</strong>g of the Scots, 2 son<br />

of k<strong>in</strong>g Kenneth, collected the army of the whole of <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

and, ravag<strong>in</strong>g with slaughter and fire the prov<strong>in</strong>ce of the Northumbrians,<br />

<strong>in</strong>vested Durham with a siege.<br />

3 At <strong>this</strong> time Aldhun ruled the bishopric t<strong>here</strong> and Wal-<br />

;<br />

deve, who was earl of Northumbria, had shut himself <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong><br />

Bamborough. For he was of extreme age, so that he could<br />

display no valour aga<strong>in</strong>st the enemy. And to his son, Utred<br />

namely, a youth of great vigour and the highest military aptitude,<br />

bishop Aldhun had given as wife his daughter, Egfrida<br />

by name. .<br />

The aforesaid youth see<strong>in</strong>g that the land was ravaged by<br />

the enemy and Durham <strong>in</strong>vested by a siege, and that his father<br />

did noth<strong>in</strong>g to prevent it, united the army of the Northumbrians<br />

and of the men of York <strong>in</strong> no small band and slew ;<br />

nearly the<br />

whole host of the Scots, while their k<strong>in</strong>g scarce escaped with a<br />

few by flight.<br />

And the heads of the sla<strong>in</strong>, ornamented as was the fashion<br />

at that time with braided hair, he caused to be conveyed to<br />

Durham and caused them to be well washed ;<br />

by four women,<br />

and set up on stakes around the walls. And to each of the<br />

women who had washed them they gave a cow as wage.<br />

When k<strong>in</strong>g Ethelred heard these th<strong>in</strong>gs he called to him<br />

the aforesaid youth and, although his father Waldeve still lived,<br />

for the merit of his vigour and for the war which he had so<br />

manfully carried through he gave him his father's earldom,<br />

to it also the earldom of York. . .<br />

But afterwards when he, that is, Utred, advanced more and<br />

add<strong>in</strong>g .<br />
