How the monks of lona with the monasteries subject to them<br />

began at the preach<strong>in</strong>g of Egbert to celebrate the <strong>can</strong>onical Easter.<br />

And not long afterwards 4 those monks of the Scottish<br />

race also who dwell <strong>in</strong> the island of lona, along with the<br />

monasteries which were subject to them, were persuaded<br />

by God's providence to the <strong>can</strong>onical rite of Easter and of<br />

the tonsure. For <strong>in</strong> the year from the Lord's <strong>in</strong>carnation<br />

71 6, 5 <strong>in</strong> which Osred was sla<strong>in</strong> and Coenred received the<br />

helm of the Northumbrian k<strong>in</strong>gdom, when Egbert, of whom<br />

we have often made mention above, 6 had come to them from<br />

Ireland, a father and priest beloved of God, and to be named<br />

with all honour, he was received by them honourably and<br />

with great joy.<br />

And s<strong>in</strong>ce he was both a most gracious teacher and a<br />

most devoted doer of the th<strong>in</strong>gs which he taught should be<br />

done, he was gladly heard by all, and changed by pious and<br />

assiduous exhortations that <strong>in</strong>veterate tradition of their<br />

fathers, concern<strong>in</strong>g whom we may quote the apostolic say<strong>in</strong>g<br />
