although <strong>in</strong>ferior <strong>in</strong> strength and arms, now prepared themselves<br />

for defence. So a battle was fought ; and the Manxmen,<br />

unarmed and naked, could not resist the sl<strong>in</strong>gers, ballistaries,<br />

archers and armed men, and fled with Godfrey their k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

And the others pursu<strong>in</strong>g them cut down and slew man and<br />

beast, as many as they could catch, spar<strong>in</strong>g not for sex or<br />

place. But Godfrey with his wife and some of his followers<br />

escaped, flee<strong>in</strong>g to Wales.<br />

And the enemy aforesaid despoiled the abbey of Rushen<br />

and the monks, and sent them away almost naked. And at<br />

that time perished miserably all the nobles and the capta<strong>in</strong>s,<br />

and also the rest of the people, whose exact number no one<br />

knows.<br />

And thus was the land destroyed and despoiled ;<br />

When <strong>this</strong> was done, 2 the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots was charged and<br />

summoned by the k<strong>in</strong>g of the English to renew <strong>in</strong> his presence<br />

the homage which he had done to k<strong>in</strong>g Henry for lands which<br />

he owes to hold of him, neighbour<strong>in</strong>g upon the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> ; and <strong>this</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, will<strong>in</strong>gly or unwill<strong>in</strong>gly, I<br />

know not, left his realm and came <strong>in</strong>to England, and com<strong>in</strong>g<br />

to our k<strong>in</strong>g adapted himself to his good pleasure <strong>in</strong> all th<strong>in</strong>gs.<br />

And that the triumph of so great a surrender should not be<br />

hid from our countrymen for the future, the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots<br />

did homage to our k<strong>in</strong>g ; obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong>, however, that hence-<br />
