Of the arrival <strong>in</strong> London of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

Also <strong>in</strong> these days and <strong>this</strong> month [of October] 3 the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>Scotland</strong> came to London, led by various causes ; namely<br />

to visit the k<strong>in</strong>g of England and the queen, and to exercise<br />

lordship and dom<strong>in</strong>ion over his earldom of Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon.<br />

Moreover he declared the more especial cause of his arrival,<br />

and asked from the k<strong>in</strong>g four thousand marks to be given him,<br />

as he said had been previously promised him by the same<br />

also the whole land between<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the espousal of his wife ;<br />

Tyne and Tweed, which he asserted had been formerly given<br />

to his predecessors ; also aid of men from the k<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

the magnates of the land aga<strong>in</strong>st his enemies, even as he had<br />

formerly promised them and the nobles of <strong>Scotland</strong> by his<br />

signed document, taken charge of and sent by brother<br />

William de Horton.<br />

And t<strong>here</strong> were then present <strong>in</strong> London the k<strong>in</strong>gs of<br />

England and of Germany ; and t<strong>here</strong>fore t<strong>here</strong> was t<strong>here</strong>,<br />

and ought to have been, so great display that the whole<br />

surround<strong>in</strong>g country endured <strong>in</strong>sufferable expense.<br />

And after a few days [Alexander's] queen followed him, very<br />

near to her conf<strong>in</strong>ement, com<strong>in</strong>g for the sake of visit<strong>in</strong>g the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and the queen and England, and, God will<strong>in</strong>g, to be delivered<br />

t<strong>here</strong> near to them. And she was conducted by the venerable<br />

man bishop [Henry] of Whithorn. And her younger brother<br />

Edmund met her and she was received <strong>in</strong> formal ;<br />

procession<br />

at St. Albans <strong>in</strong> the hour of vespers, and honourably enter-<br />
