The nobles of <strong>Scotland</strong> direct the ways of their k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

About the period of those days 1 s<strong>in</strong>ce the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

Alexander, from whose youth the greatest benefit was<br />

hoped for the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>Scotland</strong>, misgoverned too unbecom<strong>in</strong>gly,<br />

promot<strong>in</strong>g and follow<strong>in</strong>g foreigners and exalt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

and appo<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g them over his native subjects, the <strong>in</strong>habitants<br />

and natives were <strong>in</strong>dignant, and to prevent his<br />

break<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong> worse ways they placed the k<strong>in</strong>g himself and<br />

the queen under custody aga<strong>in</strong> and the ;<br />

queen they removed<br />

and guarded carefully, lest she should take after her father ;<br />

should have<br />

until, after the example of the Germans, 3<br />

they<br />

removed to a distance all the foreigners. And thenceforward<br />

the nobles of <strong>Scotland</strong> held the re<strong>in</strong>s<br />

greater<br />

of their k<strong>in</strong>gdom with<br />

freedom and safety. 4<br />

They upbraided the queen moreover <strong>in</strong> that she had <strong>in</strong>cited<br />

and summoned her father to come upon them as an<br />

enemy with his army, and do lamentable destruction. And<br />

thus Robert de Ross, most em<strong>in</strong>ent of all the northern<br />

barons, was pitilessly and irrevocably ru<strong>in</strong>ed. For all his<br />

goods which seemed saleable had for confiscation been exposed<br />

for sale.<br />
