they were believed to have with them about three hundred<br />

horses, for the sake of visit<strong>in</strong>g the lord k<strong>in</strong>g and the queen of<br />

England ; that the queen of Scots might see her father and<br />

mother, the k<strong>in</strong>g and queen, and that the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots might<br />

see his lord and father-<strong>in</strong>-law the k<strong>in</strong>g, who also by the prompt<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of affection had adopted him as his son : also to see the<br />

English queen. For they thirstily longed to see and behold<br />

the English k<strong>in</strong>g and queen, and the realm of England the<br />

manners and customs of the English, the churches, cities<br />

and castles, the rivers and meadows, woods and fields, which<br />

are appraised most highly among the delights of all realms.<br />

The, k<strong>in</strong>g of England meets the k<strong>in</strong>g and queen of <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

on their arrival.<br />

And when the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of the English learned <strong>this</strong>, with<br />

the greatest joy he met them on their arrival ; and fall<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong>to their embraces he exchanged with them pleasant and<br />

friendly conversation. And by the lord k<strong>in</strong>g's command<br />

<strong>in</strong>numerable nobles assembled t<strong>here</strong>. 1 . . .<br />

The k<strong>in</strong>g granted Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon to the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

And on the morrow 2 of St. Giles' day the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

England granted and chartered Hunt<strong>in</strong>gdon to the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, to hold and to have it and the honour perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />

to it, as some of his predecessors had had and held it.<br />

And thus the k<strong>in</strong>g decreed, although daily impoverished.<br />

Accord<strong>in</strong>g to Fl. His., ii, 414, the feast was held at Woodstock on the<br />

15th : August so Fitz-Thedmar, 23 ; so also Ann. of W<strong>in</strong>ch., <strong>in</strong> A.M., ii, 95,<br />

w<strong>here</strong> it is said that the feast was held because of the arrival of the k<strong>in</strong>g and<br />

queen of Scots.<br />

M.P., Chr. Maj., v, 574, says that on the 15th August the k<strong>in</strong>g and queen<br />

left Woodstock for London, with the whole company. On the 29th August<br />

they were enterta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> a large and magnificent banquet by John Mansel ;<br />
