star ; for he had seen that their daughter was unfaithfully<br />

because he had blamed them the Northerns had prepared<br />

for him snares of death.<br />

And when the k<strong>in</strong>g heard <strong>this</strong> he was much enraged, and<br />

silently planned vengeance for so great an offence.<br />

The k<strong>in</strong>g marches towards <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

At the same time, while the k<strong>in</strong>g was daily more and<br />

more moved by compla<strong>in</strong>ts and importuned by communications<br />

from the queen of <strong>Scotland</strong> and her friends, he called together<br />

an army and turned his re<strong>in</strong>s and standards toward <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong>tend<strong>in</strong>g to br<strong>in</strong>g a serious charge aga<strong>in</strong>st Robert de Ross<br />

and John Balliol, knights and men of great power and authority.<br />

For he was assured, so he asserted, by frequent secret communications<br />

from his vassals, that they had treated both<br />

with their servants retired to distant parts, and reported all that had been<br />
