And when the lord k<strong>in</strong>g, check<strong>in</strong>g a sob and scarce re-<br />

fra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g from tears, had answered " Gladly," the child speak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

not childishly added, say<strong>in</strong>g, " In <strong>this</strong> then I shall test and<br />

know by trial that you have <strong>in</strong> your favour hearkened to me,<br />

if you give effect to the <strong>in</strong>ception of my desire and remit all<br />

affair John Mansel was an efficient helper and the chief<br />

preceptor. x<br />

Upon the k<strong>in</strong>g's return, an <strong>in</strong>fluential guardianship is<br />

assigned to the queen of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

namely Robert de Ross.<br />

So when the wedd<strong>in</strong>g celebration was completed the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of <strong>Scotland</strong> asked for permission courteously, and departed,<br />

to return with the new queen, his wife, to his own. And the<br />

surest guardianship was assigned to the queen for her <strong>in</strong>-<br />

struction <strong>in</strong> every way, namely the knights sir Robert le<br />

Noreis the lord k<strong>in</strong>g's marshal of guests, and sir Stephen<br />

Bauzan. And with them a certa<strong>in</strong> noble dame endowed<br />

with all honour, Matilda, the widow of William the second<br />

de Cantelupe ; and certa<strong>in</strong> other prudent and courteous<br />

men.<br />

And the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England promised to send to the<br />
