of Scots, began to occupy the k<strong>in</strong>g of England's lands next<br />

to his k<strong>in</strong>gdom.<br />

army and betook himself to the northern districts, send<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>in</strong> front John Mansel <strong>in</strong>to <strong>Scotland</strong> to treat of peace : and<br />

by his mediation betrothal was contracted between the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of Scots and Margaret, daughter of the k<strong>in</strong>g of the English ;<br />

and immediately, peace be<strong>in</strong>g assured, the k<strong>in</strong>g and his whole<br />

army returned <strong>in</strong>to England.<br />

The weakness of <strong>Scotland</strong>'s policy at <strong>this</strong> time was due to the youth of<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g, accord<strong>in</strong>g to M.P., Chr. Maj., v, 266; H.A., iii, 117.<br />

Pope Innocent IV had on 6th April, 1251, refused Henry's claim that<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> could not be crowned without the k<strong>in</strong>g of England's consent,<br />

and also his claim to a tithe of the Scottish churches. Feed., i., 463.<br />
