Moreover earl Patrick died, who was held to be the most<br />

powerful among the magnates of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

And he died signed by the cross, on pilgrimage <strong>in</strong> the<br />

company of the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of the French, be<strong>in</strong>g believed to<br />

have taken the cross to be reconciled with God and St. Osw<strong>in</strong>.<br />

For he had unjustly distressed and <strong>in</strong>jured the house of Tynemouth,<br />

a cell of St. Albans, and the special domicile of that<br />

blessed k<strong>in</strong>g and martyr Osw<strong>in</strong>, whose body also is known<br />

to lie t<strong>here</strong>.<br />

Of the lamentable death of Alexander, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the cycle of the same year, on the fifth 3 before the<br />

Nones of July, died Alexander, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots ; a man wise<br />

and modest, who, after reign<strong>in</strong>g many years justly, success-<br />

fully and <strong>in</strong> peace, <strong>in</strong> his last days prompted by greed is said<br />

to have swerved from the path of justice.<br />

For, seek<strong>in</strong>g an opportunity of oppression, he k<strong>in</strong>dled<br />

gratuitous wrath aga<strong>in</strong>st one of the noblest of his realm, by<br />

name Owen 4 of Argyle, a vigorous and very handsome<br />

knight. And purpos<strong>in</strong>g to dis<strong>in</strong>herit him he laid aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

him a charge of treason, because <strong>in</strong> the last preced<strong>in</strong>g year<br />

he had done homage to the k<strong>in</strong>g of Norway for the possession<br />

of a certa<strong>in</strong> island which the father of <strong>this</strong> Owen had held of<br />

the same k<strong>in</strong>g, and for homage to him had possessed for many<br />

years <strong>in</strong> peace.<br />
