" Alexander [II], by God's grace k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, to all<br />

Christ's vassals who shall see or hear <strong>this</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g, greet<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

" We wish it to come to your knowledge that we have<br />

conceded, <strong>in</strong> our own name and <strong>in</strong> that of our heirs, and have<br />

faithfully promised to our dearest and liege-lord Henry III, by<br />

God's grace illustrious k<strong>in</strong>g of England, lord of Ireland, duke<br />

of Normandy and of Aquita<strong>in</strong>e, and earl of Anjou, and to<br />

his heirs, that we will for ever preserve good faith to him^\<br />

and that we will never enter <strong>in</strong>to*<br />

and also love for him :<br />

any treaty, either directly or through any others on our behalf,<br />

with the enemies of the k<strong>in</strong>g of England or of his heirs, to stir<br />

up or to make war by which harm would result, or could to<br />

some extent result, to them or their k<strong>in</strong>gdoms of England and<br />

Ireland, or to their other lands, unless they should unjustly<br />

oppress us : the agreements entered upon between us and<br />

the said lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England recently at York, <strong>in</strong> presence<br />

of master Otto, dean of St. Nicholas-<strong>in</strong>-carcere-Tulliano, at<br />

that time legate <strong>in</strong> England of the apostolic see, to cont<strong>in</strong>ue<br />

<strong>in</strong> full force : and sav<strong>in</strong>g the agreements made concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the contract of marriage between our son and the daughter<br />

of the said lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England.<br />

And that <strong>this</strong> our concession and promise <strong>in</strong> our name<br />

and <strong>in</strong> that of our heirs may have the confirmation of validity<br />

we have caused Alan Durward, Henry de Balliol, David de<br />

L<strong>in</strong>dsey, William Giffard, to swear by our soul that we will<br />

observe all the forego<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> good faith, firmly and faithfully.<br />

" And likewise we have caused to swear the venerable<br />

fathers David, William, Geoffrey and Clement, bishops of<br />

St. Andrews, Glasgow, Dunkeld and Dunblane : and moreover<br />

our vassals Patrick, earl of Dunbar, Malcolm, earl of<br />

Fife, Malisse, earl of Strathearn, Walter Cum<strong>in</strong> of Menteith,<br />

William, earl of Mar, Alexander, earl of Buchan, David de<br />
