Marsh when he fled from Ireland, hurt <strong>in</strong> his m<strong>in</strong>d by the<br />

betrayal of his son William, recently judicially condemned<br />

and hanged at London ;<br />

and hav<strong>in</strong>g received him had protected<br />

him, and was still protect<strong>in</strong>g him.<br />

And hence the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of England was violently provoked<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>, but reserved his anger<br />

for a fitt<strong>in</strong>g time of retribution, as the sequel shall declare.<br />

Moreover the lord k<strong>in</strong>g [Henry] heard other news 2 <strong>in</strong><br />

3 that the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> had<br />

addition to the forego<strong>in</strong>g :<br />

impudently written to the k<strong>in</strong>g say<strong>in</strong>g that not even a particle<br />

of the k<strong>in</strong>gdom of <strong>Scotland</strong> did he hold, or wished he or ought<br />

he to hold, of the k<strong>in</strong>g of England.<br />

Now friendship between the k<strong>in</strong>gs was exceed<strong>in</strong>gly stra<strong>in</strong>ed,<br />

to wit s<strong>in</strong>ce the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> had allied himself by con-<br />

tract of marriage with the daughter of Engelram de Coucy, who,<br />

as also all the French, was discerned to have been the chief,<br />

or one chief, enemy of the k<strong>in</strong>g of England.<br />

And not to reply lukewarmly to the announcement and<br />

<strong>in</strong>solence of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> [Henry] wrote confidently<br />

to the count of Flanders, 4 as his vassal and one <strong>in</strong> many ways<br />

obliged to him, to come with an armed band to his aid aga<strong>in</strong>st<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>. 5<br />

And to <strong>this</strong> [the count] k<strong>in</strong>dly consented.<br />

Engelram de Coucy dy<strong>in</strong>g miraculously, his son John was<br />

asked by the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> for military aid.<br />

Dur<strong>in</strong>g the same time, when August was approach<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Engelram de Coucy, father of the queen of <strong>Scotland</strong>, died<br />

miraculously, and John his son sent a force of knights across<br />
