And the side of England which borders upon <strong>Scotland</strong><br />

was <strong>in</strong>trusted to the same k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> for keep<strong>in</strong>g while<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g [Henry] was engaged abroad.<br />

[William Marsh's] father, one of the most powerful men<br />

of Ireland, Geoffrey Marsh by name, hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong> l fled to<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, to f<strong>in</strong>d t<strong>here</strong> scarcely safe retreat ; and wast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

away through confusion and grief soon after ended <strong>in</strong> wishedfor<br />

Of a cruel crime perpetrated by Walter Bisset <strong>in</strong> the regions<br />

of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

At <strong>this</strong> same time, while tournaments were practised<br />

calamitously <strong>in</strong> the northern regions, a certa<strong>in</strong> knight called<br />

Walter Bisset, vigorous <strong>in</strong> arms, but crafty, received a<br />

fall <strong>in</strong> the joust<strong>in</strong>g, (which was held <strong>in</strong> the borders of England<br />

and <strong>Scotland</strong>,) through the superiority of a certa<strong>in</strong> noble,<br />

namely Patrick, son of Thomas of Galloway ;<br />

and conceived<br />

the wickedness of tak<strong>in</strong>g unrighteous revenge and perform<strong>in</strong>g<br />

an unheard-of crime.<br />

While the said Patrick lodged on the follow<strong>in</strong>g night at<br />

Hadd<strong>in</strong>gton along with some other nobles who were with<br />

him, and rested securely sleep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a barn, <strong>this</strong> Walter Bisset<br />

aforesaid blocked the doors outside with barricades of tree-<br />

trunks, and apply<strong>in</strong>g fire secretly <strong>in</strong> very many places <strong>in</strong><br />

the wall of the barn, wattled with thorn, burned almost all<br />

who were t<strong>here</strong>.<br />

So t<strong>here</strong> died the said Patrick with some of his companions,<br />

vigorous and dist<strong>in</strong>guished men.<br />

And when <strong>this</strong> came to the knowledge of earl Patrick<br />

[of Dunbar] and of other magnates of <strong>Scotland</strong> they made<br />
