of Christ to whom the present writ<strong>in</strong>g may come, the prior and convent of<br />

the cathedral church of Whithorn, greet<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the Lord.<br />

When our church aforesaid was deprived of a pastor we wished to<br />

provide for our church, that the wolf should no longer <strong>in</strong>vade the Lord's<br />

desolated flock and at last after ; ask<strong>in</strong>g consent of the lord k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

who now holds Galloway, and <strong>in</strong>vok<strong>in</strong>g the favour of the holy Spirit,<br />

after the greatest deliberation we have unanimously and with one accord<br />

<strong>can</strong>onically, accord<strong>in</strong>g to custom, elected as pastor master Odo of Ydonc[hester],<br />

our fellow <strong>can</strong>on, a man literate, honourable, modest and :<br />

religious<br />

all those hav<strong>in</strong>g been summoned who ought to have been summoned.<br />

And although it seemed to us, guided by the counsel of prudent men,<br />

that the form of his election had been sufficiently expressed <strong>in</strong> the similar<br />

document signed by our signs," [ibid., 146-148 ; with twenty-two signatures,]<br />

" to wit when we had elected him <strong>can</strong>onically and unanimously and<br />

with one accord, accord<strong>in</strong>g to custom ; yet that noth<strong>in</strong>g may be able to<br />

oppose the election aforesaid, tak<strong>in</strong>g noth<strong>in</strong>g away from the previous document,<br />

which described somewhat generally the form of the aforesaid election,<br />

we give particulars <strong>in</strong> <strong>this</strong> manner.<br />

When the see of our cathedral church of Whithorn was va<strong>can</strong>t we<br />

entered our chapter-house, immediately after the third "<br />

Sunday of Lent<br />

[llth March, <strong>in</strong> 1235,] " was past, to discuss the election of a pastor ; and <strong>in</strong><br />

presence of all who rightfully should, and would, and conveniently could be<br />

present, we unanimously and with one accord chose three trustworthy men<br />

of our collegiate chapter, namely master Paul<strong>in</strong>us, master Bricius and master<br />

Crist<strong>in</strong>us, our fellow-<strong>can</strong>ons. And they secretly and separately <strong>in</strong>quired<br />

with care the wishes of all and when all had ;<br />

agreed unanimously and with<br />

one accord for the said Odo, our <strong>can</strong>on, as has been said, and after the wishes<br />

of all had been reduced to writ<strong>in</strong>g, we entered our cathedral church of Whit<br />

horn ; and when the said document had been made public <strong>in</strong> presence of all,<br />

we all unanimously and with one accord granted to the said Odo, as the said<br />

document testified, to rule as pastor our cathedral church of Whithorn.<br />

And <strong>in</strong> witness of his election we have caused faithfully to be appended the<br />

seal of our chapter, along with the seal of our prior, whom we have appo<strong>in</strong>ted<br />

our proctor <strong>in</strong> the forego<strong>in</strong>g, both to act and to protect, and if need be to<br />

appeal " [<strong>in</strong> text, apparendum ; <strong>read</strong> appellandum] " on behalf of the right<br />

of our cathedral church of Whithorn.<br />

Know all of you that we have afforded our assent to the election made<br />

of brother Gilbert, monk of Melrose, whom you have unanimously chosen<br />

for yourselves as pastor, because it was known to us that the said election<br />

had been held <strong>can</strong>onically. '<br />
