Of the entrance of a legate <strong>in</strong> the time of k<strong>in</strong>g Alexander <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong>, w<strong>here</strong> no legate had entered before.<br />

In the same time the legate [Otto] hastened to enter <strong>in</strong>to<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> and after ;<br />

arrang<strong>in</strong>g the necessary matters and that<br />

the English aldermen should spy out treachery by the if way,<br />

haply any were prepared, he set out upon the journey, choos<strong>in</strong>g<br />

sumptuous lodg<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> the abbeys and cathedral churches.<br />

And before he entered the realm of <strong>Scotland</strong> the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> met him, deny<strong>in</strong>g him entrance. For he said that<br />

never had any [papal] legate except<strong>in</strong>g him alone entered<br />

<strong>in</strong>to <strong>Scotland</strong>. For t<strong>here</strong> was no need, as he asserted ; Chris-<br />

tianity flourished t<strong>here</strong>, the church did prosperously.<br />

And after many speeches, when the k<strong>in</strong>g was almost aroused<br />

to refusal, a written agreement was prepared by the <strong>in</strong>tercession<br />

between them of the magnates of either realm : the tenour of<br />

which agreement was that never by reason of his arrival should<br />

such a custom arise moreover that ;<br />

his return he should<br />

resign that written agreement. And <strong>this</strong> was contrived that<br />

he might not return as if repulsed <strong>in</strong> confusion to England.<br />

Nevertheless he did not -cross the sea ; but stay<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the<br />

good cities on <strong>this</strong> side of the sea he summoned the bishops<br />

and noble vassals of the land, and disposed t<strong>here</strong> accord<strong>in</strong>g to<br />

his will concern<strong>in</strong>g ecclesiastical matters, collect<strong>in</strong>g no small<br />

x<br />

amount of money.<br />

And while the k<strong>in</strong>g rema<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terior of the land, the<br />

legate return<strong>in</strong>g secretly and suddenly, without the k<strong>in</strong>g's<br />

permission, carried a,way the agreement aforesaid.<br />

And about the 3 feast of AJ 1 Sa<strong>in</strong>ts 2 Peter the Red and Ruf-<br />

f<strong>in</strong>us came from the regions of <strong>Scotland</strong>, carry<strong>in</strong>g<br />

with them<br />

three thousand pounds for tl le needs of the lord pope. . . .<br />

But the k<strong>in</strong>fj of <strong>Scotland</strong>, closed his eyes and allowed the<br />

<strong>in</strong>jury to pass which had be en <strong>in</strong>flicted upon him, and which<br />

none of his predecessors had endured,<br />
