<strong>in</strong>dissoluble and as it were consangu<strong>in</strong>eal covenant, 1 and united<br />

<strong>in</strong> good fortune and ill even to the sacrifice of. their lives.<br />

So they challenged the k<strong>in</strong>g and the k<strong>in</strong>gdom to battle, and<br />

burned their own and their neighbours' houses, that the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

when he arrived with his army might not f<strong>in</strong>d lodg<strong>in</strong>g or food.<br />

And they applied themselves to plunder<strong>in</strong>g and burn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

heap<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>jury upon <strong>in</strong>jury.<br />

And the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong> collected his forces<br />

and array<strong>in</strong>g his<br />

from all sides, and advanced aga<strong>in</strong>st them ;<br />

warlike troops he attacked them <strong>in</strong> a struggle <strong>in</strong> the open.<br />

And the balance of battle turned aga<strong>in</strong>st the Galwegians, and<br />

they were compelled to take to flight ; and the k<strong>in</strong>g's men<br />

pursu<strong>in</strong>g them slew many thousands of them by the edge of<br />

the sword. And those whom the k<strong>in</strong>g or his supporters took<br />

alive, he punished without ransom by an ignom<strong>in</strong>ious death.<br />

But those who threw themselves upon his mercy he gave up to<br />

cha<strong>in</strong>s and strict imprisonment until it should be discussed <strong>in</strong><br />

court what should be done with them but ; all, not without<br />

reason, he dis<strong>in</strong>herited with their posterity.<br />

After obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong> victory, the k<strong>in</strong>g magnified God, the<br />

Lord of hosts. And follow<strong>in</strong>g sound counsel he granted <strong>in</strong><br />

mandates to Roger de Qu<strong>in</strong>cy, earl of W<strong>in</strong>chester, and John de<br />

Balliol, and William, son of the earl of Albemarle, that w<strong>here</strong>as<br />

they had united to themselves <strong>in</strong> wedlock the three sisters,<br />

they should now<br />

namely the daughters of Alan of Galloway, 2<br />

possess <strong>in</strong> peace the rights perta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g to them, the disturbance<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g stilled.<br />

Now <strong>this</strong> conflict of battle took place <strong>in</strong> the month of April,<br />

the favour of Mars more nearly support<strong>in</strong>g the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots.<br />
