But on the way to Louis, while he passed by Barnard Castle, l<br />

which was of the land of Hugh de Balliol, and situated <strong>in</strong> the<br />

prov<strong>in</strong>ce of Haliwercfolc, the said k<strong>in</strong>g went round the castle<br />

with the chief men of that district, to see if it were assailable<br />

on any side, [and] a certa<strong>in</strong> ballistary who was <strong>in</strong> the castle shot<br />

a dart and struck <strong>in</strong> the forehead Eustace de Vescy, a noble<br />

and powerful man and his ;<br />

bra<strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g pierced as well as his<br />

Now the said Eustace had to wife the sister 3 of the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

The k<strong>in</strong>g also, after do<strong>in</strong>g homage as has been said above,<br />
