constable of Chester, and Eustace de Vescy, and Robert de<br />

Ross, and William de Estuteville, and Ralph chamberla<strong>in</strong><br />

of Tankerville, and War<strong>in</strong> Fitz Gerald, and Stephen de Turnham,<br />

and Robert his brother, and Gilbert Basset, and Thomas<br />

and Alan his brothers, and Roger de Hunt<strong>in</strong>gfield, and Saer<br />

de Qu<strong>in</strong>cy, and William de Hast<strong>in</strong>gs, and Jollan de Neville,<br />

and Simon de Chancy, and Gerard de Camville, and many<br />

others of the barons of England and Normandy.<br />

' And thus hav<strong>in</strong>g performed his homage k<strong>in</strong>g William of<br />

<strong>Scotland</strong> asked of his lord John, k<strong>in</strong>g of England, the whole<br />

of Northumbria and Cumberland and Westmoreland, as his<br />

right and heritage. And when t<strong>here</strong> had been long discussion<br />

about <strong>this</strong>, and no agreement could be come to between them,<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g of England asked from the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> a truce<br />

for deliberation until Whitsunday next to come. 1<br />

And grant<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong>, William k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> <strong>in</strong> the earliest<br />

morn<strong>in</strong>g on the morrow (to wit the n<strong>in</strong>th 2 before the Kalends<br />

of December, the fifth day of the week,) returned to his own<br />

district under conduct of the aforesaid who had conducted<br />

him to the k<strong>in</strong>g of England.<br />
