k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, my dearest cous<strong>in</strong>, comes to me, I shall do for<br />

Then John, k<strong>in</strong>g of England, sent Philip, bishop of Durham,<br />

to meet the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, hop<strong>in</strong>g that he would come<br />

Malebysse, whom the k<strong>in</strong>g of England had sent for him, and<br />

asked that the k<strong>in</strong>g of England would give him back North-<br />

umbria and Cumbria but if ; not, let him know for certa<strong>in</strong><br />

that accord<strong>in</strong>g to his power he would acquire them : and to<br />

have the k<strong>in</strong>g of England's answer about <strong>this</strong> he fixed a truce<br />

of forty days, and himself meanwhile gat<strong>here</strong>d a large army.<br />

And the bishop of St. Andrews and Richard Malebysse followed<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g of England, as he hastened to the sea.<br />

Meanwhile k<strong>in</strong>g John of England gave <strong>in</strong> keep<strong>in</strong>g to William<br />

de Estuteville Northumbria and Cumbria, with their castles<br />

and counties, which Hugh Bardolf had kept ; and restored<br />

to Roger de Lacy, constable of Chester, his castle of Pomfret,<br />

tak<strong>in</strong>g from him first his son and heir as hostage.<br />
