Under <strong>this</strong> agreement 2 the above-named earls and barons 3<br />

swore to John, duke of Normandy, fealty and faithful service<br />

aga<strong>in</strong>st all men.<br />

And William, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, sent his messengers to John,<br />

duke of Normandy, ask<strong>in</strong>g for his patrimony to be restored<br />

to him, namely Northumbria and Cumbria, with their appurtenances<br />

and he would swear ;<br />

fealty to him, and serve him<br />

faithfully aga<strong>in</strong>st all men.<br />

But [Hubert], archbishop of Canterbury, and William<br />

Marshal and Geoffrey Fitz Peter did not permit the messengers<br />

of the k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> to sail over to the duke ; but<br />

announced to [William] by earl David, his brother, that he<br />

should wait patiently till the duke came to England.<br />

Likewise John duke of Normandy announced to William<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots by Eustace de Vescy, his brother-<strong>in</strong>-law, 4 that<br />

on his return to England he would satisfy him regard<strong>in</strong>g all<br />

his petitions, if meanwhile he preserved peace with him. 5<br />
