T<strong>here</strong>after the k<strong>in</strong>g returned to his own land, and Harold<br />

to Orkney.<br />

T<strong>here</strong>after <strong>in</strong> autumn the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots went back <strong>in</strong>to<br />

Moray, as far as to Nairn, to receive from Harold his<br />

enemies ; but when Harold had brought them as far as the<br />

harbour of Loch Loy, near to Nairn, he allowed them to go<br />

away and ; late, when the k<strong>in</strong>g returned from hunt<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

Harold came to him br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g with him two boys, his grandsons,<br />

to give up to the k<strong>in</strong>g as hostages.<br />

And when he was asked by the k<strong>in</strong>g w<strong>here</strong> were his enemies<br />

whom he ought to have given up, and w<strong>here</strong> was Torf<strong>in</strong>n,<br />

his son, whom he had promised to give as hostage, he replied :<br />

" I have allowed them to go away, know<strong>in</strong>g that if I had<br />

given them up to you they would not escape your hands ;<br />

but my son I have not been able to br<strong>in</strong>g, because <strong>in</strong> that<br />

land t<strong>here</strong> is no other heir."<br />

T<strong>here</strong>fore because he had not kept the agreements which<br />

he had made with his lord the k<strong>in</strong>g, it was adjudged that he<br />

should rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> captivity of the k<strong>in</strong>g until his son should<br />

come and become a hostage. And because that he had<br />

allowed the k<strong>in</strong>g's enemies to go away, he was judged to have<br />

been unworthy of the land which he held of the k<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

And the k<strong>in</strong>g took Harold with him to the castle of Maidens<br />

and held him <strong>in</strong> cha<strong>in</strong>s, until his men brought from Orkney<br />

his son Torf<strong>in</strong>n, and giv<strong>in</strong>g him as hostage to the lord k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

released Harold from the k<strong>in</strong>g's prison.<br />

And Harold returned to Orkney, and dwelt t<strong>here</strong> <strong>in</strong> peace<br />

and quiet until Harold the younger received from Swerre<br />

Birkbe<strong>in</strong>, k<strong>in</strong>g of Norway, permission to claim the half of<br />

Orkney, and brought with him Siward Murd from Hegland<br />

and many other warriors, and <strong>in</strong>vaded Orkney.<br />

And Harold the elder would not enter battle with him,<br />

and<br />

but leav<strong>in</strong>g Orkney departed to the island of Man ;<br />

t<strong>here</strong> collected a fleet and many men.<br />

Likewise did Harold the younger, and went to the island<br />

of Man, wish<strong>in</strong>g to meet with Harold the elder but before<br />

;<br />

his arrival Harold the elder entered Orkney by another way<br />

with his fleet, and slew all whom he found <strong>in</strong> Orkney.<br />

Hear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>this</strong>, Harold the younger returned to Caithness<br />

at Wick, and fought with Harold the elder and <strong>in</strong> that<br />

;<br />

battle Harold the younger and all his army were sla<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Thus when Harold the younger was sla<strong>in</strong>, Harold the<br />

elder came to the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots by conduct of Roger and<br />

Ronald bishops of St. Andrews and Rosemarkie, and offered
