both clergy and lay of either realm, granted and confirmed<br />

by his charter to William, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, and to his heirs for<br />

ever, that whenever they should come by summons of the<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of England to his court, the bishop of Durham and the<br />

sheriff of Northumbria shall receive [them] at the water<br />

of Tweed, and br<strong>in</strong>g them <strong>in</strong> safe conduct to the water of<br />

Tees : and t<strong>here</strong> the archbishop of York and the sheriff<br />

of York shall receive them, and <strong>in</strong> safe conduct br<strong>in</strong>g them<br />

to the bounds of the county of York and so ; they shall be<br />

brought by bishops and sheriffs from county to county, till<br />

they arrive at the court of the k<strong>in</strong>g of England. And from<br />

the time when the k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots enters the land of the k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

of England, he shall have daily from the purse of the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

England a hundred shill<strong>in</strong>gs l <strong>in</strong> allowance. And when the<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong> has come to the court of the k<strong>in</strong>g of England,<br />

so long as he stays <strong>in</strong> the court of the k<strong>in</strong>g of England he shall<br />

receive daily <strong>in</strong> allowance thirty shill<strong>in</strong>gs, and twelve royal<br />

and four p<strong>in</strong>ts 2<br />

wastel-cakes, and twelve royal simnel-loaves ;<br />

of the k<strong>in</strong>g's royal w<strong>in</strong>e, and eight p<strong>in</strong>ts of expensive w<strong>in</strong>e ;<br />

and two pounds of pepper, and four pounds of cum<strong>in</strong> and<br />

;<br />

two stones of wax or four wax <strong>can</strong>dles, and forty thick and<br />

long pieces of the royal <strong>can</strong>dle of the k<strong>in</strong>g, and four score<br />

pieces of other expensive <strong>can</strong>dle.<br />

And when he wishes to return <strong>in</strong>to his own land, he shall<br />

be conducted by bishops and sheriffs from county to county,<br />

till he come to the water of Tweed ; and he shall have like-<br />

wise daily a hundred shill<strong>in</strong>gs from the purse of the k<strong>in</strong>g of<br />

England<br />

<strong>in</strong> allowance.<br />

And the charter of <strong>this</strong> concession and confirmation of<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g of England was given to William, k<strong>in</strong>g of <strong>Scotland</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong> the vill of Northampton, the second day 3 <strong>in</strong> the week of<br />

Easter, by the hand of William, bishop of Ely, the k<strong>in</strong>g's<br />

chancellor ; <strong>in</strong> the year from the <strong>in</strong>carnation of our Lord<br />

Jesus Christ 1194, and <strong>in</strong> the fifth year of the reign of k<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Richard.<br />

Discord between William, k<strong>in</strong>g of Scots, and bishop Hugh,<br />

k<strong>in</strong>g of England, returned from Northampton and went to<br />
