Letter of pope Clement to Henry, k<strong>in</strong>g of England, concern<strong>in</strong>g<br />

John, bishop of St. Andrews of <strong>Scotland</strong>.<br />

" Bishop Clement, servant of the servants of God, to the<br />

illustrious k<strong>in</strong>g of England, greet<strong>in</strong>g and apostolic benediction.<br />

" When the authority and power of thy royal Excellency<br />

has received from the apostolic see prayers to give effect to<br />

which is beneficial for the preservation of the churches <strong>in</strong><br />

their state, and for the well-be<strong>in</strong>g of many ; diligently should<br />

thy royal Sublimity heed them, and strive that the result<br />

shall follow the wish, so much the more strongly and fer-<br />

vently as the devout receiv<strong>in</strong>g of them and their diligent<br />

execution redound equally to thy royal glory and well-be<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

" Hence it is that we have thought fit to send with confi-<br />

dence to your Serenity apostolic letters and prayers on behalf<br />

of our venerable brother the bishop of St. Andrews,<br />

ask<strong>in</strong>g with all the affection we <strong>can</strong> the highness of your<br />

royal Em<strong>in</strong>ence, and admonish<strong>in</strong>g, and enjo<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g for the<br />

through his reverence for St. Peter and for us, and by reason<br />

of his persecution which it is certa<strong>in</strong> that [John] has for a<br />

long time endured ; and <strong>in</strong>duce him, and if it be necessary<br />

compel him, by the royal control <strong>in</strong> which thou standest<br />

over him, and the authority yielded to thy royal Highness,<br />

to set every pretext aside and relax to [John] the bitterness<br />
